Swish is a Swedish mobile payment app that lets users send money and pay for purchases instantly—in-store, online, and between peers. Launched in 2012 by six of Sweden's largest banks, it’s grown to 8.8 million users and is the second most used payment method for ecommerce in Sweden.

Businesses that integrate Swish payments benefit from the service’s strong security measures, real-time payment processing, and use of mobile BankID—a Swedish digital identification system.

What is Swish?

Swish is a real-time mobile payment system in Sweden backed by six of the country’s major banking institutions. Designed for both individual customers and commercial businesses, it enables instant peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers and simplifies online and in-store payments. Transactions are linked directly to a Swedish bank account and authenticated through mobile BankID. This makes Swish a ubiquitous payment method across the nation.

How does Swish work?

Swish allows users to send money almost instantly with their smartphones. To use this payment method, users must have a Swedish bank account and a mobile BankID. They register through their banks, link their mobile numbers to their accounts, and activate the Swish app using mobile BankID. Here’s how customers use Swish to make payments:

  • In-store payments: To make an in-store payment, the customer opens the app, enters the store’s Swish number and the payment amount, and confirms the transaction with their mobile BankID. If the store offers quick-response (QR) code payments, the customer can scan the QR code and authorize the payment.

  • Online payments: For an online payment, the customer selects Swish at checkout, enters their phone number, and approves the payment in the app via BankID.

Where is Swish used?

Swish is widely used across Sweden, with a 2025 industry survey indicating that it’s the second most common payment method after debit cards.

Does Swish work outside Sweden?

Swish is currently available only to customers with a Swedish bank account and a Swedish mobile BankID. It cannot be used by businesses or customers outside Sweden. Businesses that accept international payments should consider supplementing Swish with a global payment method such as a card processor.

Who uses Swish?

A broad spectrum of businesses in Sweden use Swish, from large corporations to small local vendors. Here are the types of businesses that most commonly accept Swish:

  • Retailers: Online and in-person retailers accept Swish payments for a quick checkout process.

  • Restaurants: Restaurants, cafés, and food trucks use Swish for its fast, low-friction payments.

  • Health and wellness providers: Fitness studios, private clinics, and other health and wellness businesses often accept Swish.

  • Transportation: Taxi companies and ride-hailing services accept Swish for fare payments.

  • Event management: Event organizers—including those for concerts, sports events, and festivals—use Swish for ticket and merchandise payments.

  • Charities and nonprofits: These organizations commonly collect donations via Swish. Nordea Bank waives transaction fees for eligible nonprofits.

  • Utility companies: Some utility and service companies allow bill payments through Swish.

Benefits of accepting Swish

Accepting Swish as a payment method has several benefits for businesses in Sweden, from real-time funds processing to increased payment flexibility. Here are some key advantages:

  • Real-time processing: Unlike with card transactions, Swish transactions settle in the receiver’s account almost immediately. This provides businesses with quicker access to funds.

  • Low transaction costs: Swish is free for customers, and businesses typically pay a low, flat rate. It’s usually about 1–3 Swedish kronor (SEK) per inbound payment, plus an optional annual bank or payments service provider (PSP) agreement fee.

  • Better security: Swish uses bank-grade security measures, including multifactor authentication. This reduces the risk of fraudulent activities and provides peace of mind for businesses.

  • Easier reconciliation: The digital nature of Swish payments makes financial reconciliation easier and minimizes the potential for errors.

  • More flexibility: Swish works in mobile or temporary environments (markets, fairs, and events) where traditional payment terminals aren't available.

What does Swish cost for businesses?

When businesses accept Swish directly, per-transaction fees typically range from 1–3 SEK depending on the specific bank and chosen service tier. In addition to transaction fees, banks might charge an initial setup fee and monthly or yearly maintenance costs. Registered charities and nonprofits often qualify for reduced rates or complete fee waivers.

Businesses that integrate Swish through a PSP like Stripe benefit from a simplified fee structure. Instead of managing direct banking agreements and recurring maintenance charges, they see their processing costs consolidated into Stripe’s unified per-transaction billing framework. This provides transparent pricing, eliminates separate bank setup friction, and simplifies financial reconciliation alongside all other active payment methods.

Swish security

Swish is considered one of the most secure mobile payment methods in Sweden. It combines security measures such as bank-level encryption, mandatory BankID authentication, and real-time fraud monitoring. It also complies fully with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and EU financial regulations.

Here’s an overview of its key security features:

  • Bank-level security: Because Swish is directly linked to users’ bank accounts, the service operates under the same strict security protocols as its partnered banking institutions. This ensures that all transactions are protected by high standards of financial security.

  • Mobile BankID: Swish transactions require authentication through mobile BankID, a Swedish digital identification solution. Mobile BankID serves as a two-factor authentication method by requiring users to verify their identities through a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition before a transaction is approved.

  • Transaction limits: Individual banks set their own limits, but the maximum per transaction is 150,000 SEK. This adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized or fraudulent transactions.

  • End-to-end encryption: All data transmitted during a Swish transaction is encrypted using end-to-end encryption, which protects sensitive information from unauthorized access during transmission.

  • Advanced fraud monitoring: Swish and its associated banks use real-time monitoring and fraud detection systems that analyze transaction patterns to identify and flag suspicious activities. This helps prevent fraud before it occurs.

  • Regulation compliance: Swish operates in compliance with Swedish and EU financial regulations such as the EU’s GDPR.

How to accept Swish as a payment method

Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting started with Swish payments:

  • Open a supporting Swedish bank account: Establish a business bank account with a Swedish financial institution that offers Swish services for corporate entities.

  • Sign a Swish merchant agreement: Sign either a Swish for Merchants (Swish Handel) or Swish Business (Swish Företag) contract with your bank, depending on your primary sales channels.

  • Appoint a Certificate Point of Contact (CPOC): Designate an authorized contact person within your organization to access the certificate manager and generate your security certificate.

  • Install the certificate and integrate the API: Deploy the generated certificate onto your web server to establish a secure connection with the Swish application programming interface (API) and complete your site checkout integration.

Businesses that integrate through a PSP like Stripe can skip many of those steps. Here’s the process for setting up Swish as a payment method in Stripe:

  1. Sign in to your Stripe account or create a new account.

  2. Go to the Stripe Dashboard and enable Swish as a payment method. If you use Stripe Connect, Stripe will automatically determine the most relevant payment methods to display at checkout.

  3. If you need to manually configure a new payment method, create a new Checkout Session and add Swish to the list of payment method types.

Swish vs. other Nordic payment methods

Businesses that seek mobile payment solutions in the Nordic countries and around the world will encounter these popular alternatives to Swish:

  • Vipps: Vipps is a Norwegian mobile payment method used for sending P2P or customer-to-business payments via phone number.

  • MobilePay: MobilePay is a popular mobile payment app in Denmark and Finland that lets users send P2P payments via phone number and make quick purchases using the app. Vipps and MobilePay had a combined 12.4 million users across the Nordic region in 2025.

  • Skrill: Skrill is a digital wallet used to make payments and transfer money throughout Europe. It’s commonly used by the gaming and betting industries, and it provides international reach by supporting over 40 currencies.

  • PayPal: PayPal is a global online payments platform that allows users to pay using their PayPal account balances, linked bank accounts, or credit cards. Because PayPal is used around the world, accepting these payments can expand a business’s international customer base.

  • Amazon Pay: Amazon Pay is an online payments service that lets Amazon users make online purchases on other websites using the payment details saved in their Amazon accounts. This payment option is available to businesses in the US, Europe, and Japan. It simplifies the checkout process by reducing the need for customers to enter their payment details.
