Challenge
AlloDons launched in 2018 with a simple goal: to provide charitable organizations with an easier way to collect and manage donations from their supporters. The company created an online platform that offered customizable fundraising pages for each nonprofit, with payments powered by a large bank based in France.
Before officially rolling out the platform, AlloDons tested it with a handful of local nonprofits—and immediately encountered problems with the bank’s payment system. The system was unreliable even at minimal transaction volume and resulted in a series of payment failures. The company realized that it needed payments technology with a proven track record for processing and optimizing acceptance for payment volumes from a large donor base.
As a new payment provider, AlloDons also wanted a partner whose technology could enable other important features of the platform, such as providing nonprofits with fast onboarding, a detailed view of donor information for recordkeeping and future fundraising outreach, a simple process for sending tax receipts to donors, and a comprehensive breakdown of fees and expenses on every donation.
To help nonprofits maximize donations, AlloDons wanted to ensure it could support multiple payment methods, currencies, and ways to pay, including recurring donations or one-time payments
Solution
AlloDons switched to Stripe shortly after launching its platform to a broad audience in 2018. Because a long list of large, well-established organizations relied on Stripe, AlloDons was confident that Stripe would have the capabilities and infrastructure to serve its growing network of nonprofits. “We told ourselves, ‘We have to think big and do what the big players are doing,’” said Avi Farhi, AlloDons’ founder and CEO.
AlloDons integrated Stripe Connect, which enabled the business to embed best-in-class payments technology into its platform and create its own payments service to help nonprofits easily collect donations and access funds. Nonprofits can create a fundraising page on AlloDons and then share links to that page on their own websites or through social media to collect donations. Once a payment is made on the platform, Connect helps AlloDons automatically control the flow of funds, including processing the payment, specifying the service fee on each transaction, and distributing the remaining funds to the nonprofit within three business days.
Data gathered from each nonprofit’s Connect accounts helps AlloDons manage a range of recordkeeping for each user, including the ability to generate a comprehensive list of donors and donation amounts and a system to automate tax receipts. These tax receipts are important to French donors, who receive considerable tax benefits from charitable gifts. When a donor gives through the AlloDons platform, payment information from Stripe automatically triggers AlloDons to generate tax receipts that are sent instantly to the donor.
AlloDons also uses Connect to help with the often-complicated process of onboarding new nonprofits. When a nonprofit registers on AlloDons, it’s guided through an integrated form powered by Stripe that verifies its identity, gathers banking and tax information, and ensures regulatory compliance. The automated onboarding process requires no manual work on the part of AlloDons, enabling it to quickly activate new users. In many cases, those nonprofits are able to begin receiving donations the same day they register.
Stripe’s Optimized Checkout Suite enables AlloDons to improve its checkout flow and provide more payment options to donors. The Optimized Checkout Suite includes Stripe Checkout, a prebuilt payment form that nonprofits can embed directly into their sites. Checkout allows users to easily offer a range of payment options including credit cards and digital wallets such as Apple Pay, PayPal, and Google Pay.
Through the Optimized Checkout Suite, AlloDons is also able to use Stripe Adaptive Pricing, which enables donors to pay in local currencies, such as the euro, US dollar, and Israeli shekel, and automatically handles currency conversions. The Optimized Checkout Suite also provides access to Link, a wallet built by Stripe that provides donors with an accelerated checkout experience.
AlloDons also gives its nonprofits access to Stripe Billing, which offers nonprofits more control over how they receive donations and also allows them to accept recurring donations. This is key to nonprofits using AlloDons, as donors are typically more comfortable making smaller monthly donations than larger one-time donations. These recurring donations also benefit nonprofits, helping to smooth out payment volume to support their ongoing operations.
