Jobs at Stripe

We’re looking for people who care deeply about quality of execution and who want to build technology that people love to use.

Who we are

  • Free lunch and dinner as well as endless snacks and beverages.
  • Open vacation policy. We don't count days.
  • Buy or build your ideal work environment.
  • Free gym membership.
  • Flexible work hours.
  • Free laundry service.
  • Competitive salary and equity packages.
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Relocation support.
  • Paid maternity and paternity leave.
  • 401(k) plan.

We're making it easier for people to transact on the internet. By building thoughtful infrastructure and interfaces, we're helping to put new people and companies in business.

Our about page lists the team so far. We're good friends and enjoy spending time together. We like people who can set their own direction, can debate without animosity, and care about what they create.

Our organization is very flat. The people making decisions are also the ones implementing them.

You might fit in well at Stripe if you enjoy teaching yourself whatever you need in order to get things done, and if you enjoy working with a team.

Stripe's investors include Elon Musk, Y Combinator, Max Levchin, Andreessen Horowitz, and Peter Thiel.

We're hiring for all roles. Below are some positions for which we're particularly interested in finding people.

Engineer

Type things to make the programs go.

Ongoing Projects

Our product is built primarily in Ruby and JavaScript/CoffeeScript. Problems we work on include:

Applications

Our major external-facing applications are the Stripe web interface and the API. We move quickly, deploying code many times a day. We iterate rapidly, but we also spend time carefully thinking through the edge cases of our products and making sure that they work very well.

Data analytics and fraud detection

Stripe has a lot of data problems to tackle, ranging from fraud algorithms to understanding how people are using Stripe. Our data sources include everything from a user clicking around the Stripe web interface to a consumer making a purchase on that user's website, and we're always building better ways of discovering signals in the seeming chaos.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure encompasses everything below the application layer. Most of the work here is building software that enables the API and web interface. Examples include finding and removing performance bottlenecks, building a framework for stream processing, and server architecture and administration.

Applying

To apply, email us at jobs+engineer@stripe.com. Include whatever information you think would be most useful for us in understanding your background and accomplishments. Links to GitHub and Twitter are always useful. We especially appreciate pointers to projects of which you are particularly proud, along with some explanation of what that project does.

Resumes are useful, but they also tend to have fairly low signal on their own. It's often quite useful for us if you also send along an explanation of your background, what you like to work on, and what excites you about working at Stripe.

Engineering Intern

Ongoing Projects

Our engineering interns work alongside our full-time engineers, all working on the same types of high-impact projects. The Stripe product is built primarily in Ruby and JavaScript/CoffeeScript. Problems we work on include:

Data Engineer

Create knowledge from data.

We're looking for data engineers who can help us identify the questions we should be asking, and answer them. You should love clever analysis and get excited about elegance in experimental design.

Responsibilities:

  • Discover the important questions that Stripe should be asking, and then answer them with data. Design and run your own experiments.
  • Identify useful metrics. Set up graphs and reports to track these metrics.
  • Keep our data structured in a way that makes regular analysis easy and flexible.
  • Evangelize data within the company.

Requirements:

  • Comfortable writing well-structured, production-ready code to support your work.
  • Proficiency with your data program of choice (R, Matlab, SPSS, etc).
  • Strong knowledge of experimental design and interpretation of results.

Applying

To apply, email jobs+data@stripe.com with:

  • Your resume, LinkedIn and/or blog.
  • A link to or attachment of some code you've written.
  • A quick description of previous work you're proud of.
  • A paper you think is interesting, and why.
Apply now

Infrastructure Engineer

Build the platform powering Stripe.

Infrastructure engineers build the platform used by the rest of Stripe. Sometimes this involves building highly-available distributed systems. Sometimes this requires creating internal tools to improve our development workflow. Sometimes this involves staring at a backtrace trying to track down an obscure interaction between two system components.

Sample projects

  • Design and implement a durable complex event-processing service with exactly-once semantics.
  • Create an internal framework for writing new API endpoints.
  • Track down and fix a memory leak plaguing a service.

You might be a fit if...

  • You've designed widely-used libraries.
  • You've scaled a large system before. You realize that 95% of scaling is doing nitty-gritty detail work.
  • You have extensive experience with server operations, though you lean more towards writing code.

Applying

To apply, email jobs+infrastructure-engineer@stripe.com with:

  • A description of your relevant background and interests.
  • A production issue you ran into in the past, and how you solved it.
  • A sample of production-quality code you've written.
  • A link to relevant online profiles (e.g. Github, Twitter, Launchpad, maybe even Bitbucket).
  • Your SSH pubkey.
Apply now

Product Engineer

Build the tools underlying commerce on the web.

As a product engineer at Stripe, you'll create the software we ship to our users: the Stripe API, dashboard, documentation, Checkout, and libraries. You should expect to slide up and down the software stack, building the infrastructure to support the products you release.

You should be able to empathize both with users and the rest of your team. This means considering both how our users will use your software and how your peers will use your code.

You should have built and, more importantly, maintained widely-used products. You're willing to pick up the slack and do the unglamorous tasks.

You should have a knack for making tools powerful without compromising their ease of use. This applies to both for visual tools (like our dashboard) and programming tools (like our API).

Requirements:

  • Experience building and maintaining products with real-world usage.
  • Have opinions about good and bad products and the ability to justify them.

Pluses

  • Previous work on an API.
  • Extensive familiarity with JavaScript/CoffeeScript.
  • Experience working on, and an understanding of, both client-side and server-side code.

Applying

To apply, email jobs+product-engineer@stripe.com with:

  • A resume or GitHub link.
  • A summary of the products you're most proud of and how they're used.
Apply now

Reliability Engineer

Maximize Stripe's availability and performance.

Reliability engineers make Stripe work. Whether it's deploying and maintaining server clusters, building tools to automate a deployment pipeline, or designing and implementing a new piece of our request pipeline, reliabliity engineers make sure that Stripe is as fast and reliable as possible.

Sample Projects

  • Design and build tools for managing our server fleet.
  • Build a profiling framework in our code, and fix performance bottlenecks.
  • Identify and eliminate the most likely reasons for Stripe to go down.
  • Improve our Puppet abstractions so it's easy for others to deploy their own services.

You might be a fit if...

  • You have extensive experience writing production code, though you lean more towards playing around with running systems.
  • You desire to automate all the things, but you have the pragmatism to decide when and how to introduce automation.
  • You're comfortable with Bash as a tool for solving one-off problems, but you switch to a language like Ruby or Python for general solutions.

Applying

To apply, email jobs+reliability-engineer@stripe.com with:

  • A description of your relevant background and interests.
  • A production issue you ran into in the past, and how you solved it.
  • A sample of production-quality code you've written.
  • A link to relevant online profiles (e.g. Github, Twitter, Launchpad, maybe even Bitbucket).
  • Your SSH pubkey.

Designer

Play a key role in the visual design and user experience of Stripe.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for designers who can make detailed graphics, but also have a deep understanding of how applications should work and — more importantly — how they should feel.

You should be able to implement your ideas into working prototypes using HTML and CSS. The projects you'll be working on include everything from creating simple and intuitive user interfaces to more traditional web design.

As a designer you'll be working closely with engineers to develop new features and enhance current parts of Stripe. You'll have creative control over your projects and help set the visual tone of Stripe.

Requirements

  • Experience creating and maintaining products with real-world users.
  • Comfortable working in HTML and CSS.
  • Strong and opinionated visual design.

Pluses:

  • Icon or illustration work.
  • Great understanding of CSS, especially its issues and quirks.
  • Comfortable in JavaScript or CoffeeScript.

Applying

To apply, send us work you're proud of; links to your Dribbble profile or portfolio are useful.

Stripe's support engineers work with our users to answer questions and solve problems. They work with the rest of the team to ensure that those problems don't arise again. Support engineers rapidly get to know both new people and new code. Interacting primarily through email and real-time chat, we guide developers along the process of creating paid products. Stripe's support team informs the direction of the Stripe product by painting a detailed picture of how Stripe is used.

Stripe's support team manages itself independently and develops the infrastructure we use to help our users. This means finding the best tools out there or implementing our own. To date, this has included tools for analytics on support communications, Stripe Answers, custom Twitter tools, and more.
