Behind the scenes: How Stripe supports Rivian

Rivian is committed to “keep the world adventurous forever” by producing all-electric trucks, SUVs, and commercial vans. Built for off-roading, school drop-offs, and everything in between, Rivian’s vehicles blend rugged performance with cutting-edge technology.

It’s late. After a day spent driving from one national park to the next, all you want to do is set up your tent, toast a few marshmallows, and relax—but your vehicle battery is running low. You pull into a charging station on the way to your campsite and plug in. Soon your car is fully charged, you’ve paid, and you’re back on the road. No need to swipe your credit card or even tap to pay—that’s all taken care of.

This is the Rivian experience in a nutshell: technology that works in the background so adventure stays front and center. It’s the vision that Rivian founder RJ Scaringe had from the beginning. He didn’t just want to make electric cars. He wanted to make adventure vehicles—electric trucks and SUVs—as adept at navigating the backcountry as cruising around town. And he wanted Rivian to lead every part of the journey, from purchase to service, to ensure every touchpoint felt intentional.

As a result, Rivian created just about everything itself: the vehicles, the software, the charging network, and even an in-house system that connected to a third-party ordering platform. But that platform lacked flexibility, so Rivian decided to build its own in-house ordering and configuration software.

When it needed a strong foundation for secure, reliable payment processing, Rivian turned to Stripe.

A seamless payment experience at every touchpoint

The Rivian team focused on building adventure-ready vehicles and the ecosystem—service, software, charging—to keep them performing at their best. But the company needed a system that reduced its operational burden for payments.

Stripe Payments fit the task, offering a development experience that included easy-to-use APIs and webhook support. The platform was easy to plug into Rivian’s existing stack and embed payments across web, mobile, and even in-vehicle screens. For customers, this created a simplified payment experience—enter details once and use them anywhere in the Rivian ecosystem, from vehicle deposits to charging, service, gear, and vehicle software updates. It has also allowed the company to offer its customers their preferred payment method—supporting credit cards, ACH payments, and pre-authorized debit (PAD) for Canadian customers.

Stripe handled the heavy lifting on the back end, too. Stripe Radar for Fraud Teams helps detect fraudulent activity in real time, leveraging AI trained on data from millions of businesses around the world. This global reach gives Radar the context it needs to assign every transaction an appropriate risk score and block high-risk payments automatically. Plus, Rivian can also tailor Radar’s functionality through features like custom fraud prevention rules. Since implementing Stripe, Rivian’s dispute transaction rates have stayed at less than 1%.

Stripe also manages PCI compliance, saving time for Rivian’s legal team.

Holding up under pressure

It’s one thing to demonstrate a vehicle in a showroom. Proving it can hold up under the stress of real-world conditions like snowstorms or muddy trails is another altogether. Ensuring its vehicles perform when it counts is what matters most to Rivian.

The same goes for its payments infrastructure, which was put to the test during the live streamed launch of the R2 in 2024. Rivian had flagged the expected spike to Stripe in advance to ensure it didn’t hit rate limits or encounter other hiccups during the surge.

Despite the volume, the system held strong. “It was a smooth interaction, and we didn’t have to worry about any performance issues,” said Sangani.

A reliable partner to scale with the business

Stripe’s reliability has allowed Rivian to scale confidently, whether it’s launching fresh offerings or expanding into new customer segments. Each line of business—including fleet services, service parts, and third-party collision repairs—has a clean payout trail and cost center alignment.

Those clear reporting lanes feed straight into the Stripe Dashboard and webhook events, giving Rivian’s finance and accounting team near real-time reconciliation capabilities. “The Stripe documentation has been great. Webhooks are especially helpful when we need specific information,” said Sangani.

With Stripe’s prebuilt features, the company doesn’t need to staff a huge payments team to offer a top-of-the-line customer experience.

Rivian’s passport to global expansion

As Rivian sets its sights on new markets, Stripe serves as its payment passport. Stripe Payments already supports Canadian customers with ease, and it’s built to add local payment methods, currencies, and rules just as smoothly in other regions.
