Full Stack Engineer, Risk & Support

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the teams

Risk Engineering combines machine learning and product development to reduce Stripe’s financial and regulatory risk at scale while preserving a best in class user experience. We build ML models and backend systems to detect fraud, assess users’ cash flow and financial health, and ensure compliance with regulatory and financial partner requirements, protecting Stripe’s brand and guarding against financial losses that could threaten the business. The Risk group is made up of machine learning, backend, and full-stack engineers who solve these challenges through creative product ideas, impactful models, and scalable infrastructure; we’re launching several new efforts where you can have an outsized impact on the architecture, implementation, and design of these systems.

The Support Experience engineering team designs and improves Stripe’s end-to-end support experience: how customers get help inside our products, how they contact us when they have questions, and how our teams use internal tools to respond. We own the quality and reliability of that support stack and rely on data and direct user research to drive continuous improvement. A small, distributed group of capable, user-focused engineers, we work closely with Stripe’s design, product, infrastructure, and operations teams. Delivering excellent support to customers of every size is central to Stripe’s culture.

The Support Products engineering team is building entirely new externally-facing products, leveraging Stripe’s scale and expertise to help merchants serve their customers better through Stripe. We build automations and internal tools to provide support across many different mediums (phone, email, chat, etc.). This enables businesses to focus on their core products while trusting Stripe to provide high-quality support to end users on their behalf. As an early hire, your role more closely resembles that of a founding engineer at a startup within Stripe. You’ll collaborate with peer teams and cross-functional partners to shape our product vision, build robust systems from scratch, and work directly with our early adopters to onboard them onto our products and gather feedback.

What you’ll do

  • Build, operate, and improve products and tools that serve a wide range of users, from small customers to large enterprises.
  • Work side-by-side with user-facing teams to understand their needs, develop short- and long-term solutions, and deploy those solutions across global, around-the-clock operations.
  • Improve internal tools that empower user-facing teams to create new workflows, publish dynamic and localized content, and respond to requests with the right context for any user.
  • Own problems end to end: manage complexity, engage directly with stakeholders, and consider business impact, reliability and operability, and the user experience of individual interactions.
  • Uphold high standards for engineering and product quality and mentor newer team members to do the same.
  • Design clear, reusable abstractions and interfaces that other engineers can easily integrate with.
  • Collaborate with engineers across machine learning, data science, product, and platform teams to ensure designs meet cross-functional needs.
  • Build and run systems that expose these abstractions in accessible ways for teams across the company.
  • Contribute to organizational safety and resilience by helping teams think holistically about how their systems introduce or mitigate operational and business risk.
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack.
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

    • You enjoy data modeling challenges and have a high bar for keeping your solutions expressive yet simple to use
    • Excellent written and verbal communication
    • Enjoy being a generalist working on both the frontend, backend, and anything it takes to solve problems and delight users both internally and externally
    • Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
    • Take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems
    • Can stitch together many different services and processes together even if you have not worked with them before
    • Can put yourself in the shoes of your users and be a steward of crafting great experiences
    • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people with different expertise
    • Uphold best practices in engineering, security, and design

Hybrid work at Stripe

This role is available either in an office or a remote location (35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

In-office expectations

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

Working remotely at Stripe

A remote location is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently live or plan to live.

Pay and benefits

The annual salary range for this role in the primary location is CA$135,200 - CA$258,000. This range may change if you are hired in another location. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings (“OTE”) range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and specific location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the primary location may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Specific benefits and details about what compensation is included in the salary range listed above will vary depending on the applicant’s location and can be discussed in more detail during the interview process. Benefits/additional compensation for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; retirement plans; health benefits; and wellness stipends.
