Staff Engineer, Developer AI

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Developer AI is a new, experimental team rethinking Stripe’s external developer experience for the AI era. We are using the latest LLMs and AI engineering techniques to help developers streamline and automate the building and maintaining of their Stripe integrations. Some areas we are currently working on:

  • Automating the zero to one integration experience for developers building on Stripe’s APIs
  • Bringing Stripe knowledge (docs, reference, support, etc) to developer fingertips, wherever they are working
  • Reducing the pain of API migrations and upgrades

What you’ll do

We’re looking for an experienced software engineer and technical leader to help develop, drive, and implement our roadmap. This team is on the bleeding-edge of AI engineering at Stripe so you will have an opportunity to not only redefine Stripe’s world-class DX, but also how we utilize AI in product development across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build innovative new developer tools and experiences and the highly performant, AI-powered systems that back them
  • Get to know our users and ensure the team is solving the right problems
  • Be an expert and technical leader at the company for all things AI engineering (prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, eval, etc)
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling and processes for the team and our broader org
  • Make effective tradeoffs that consider business priorities, user experience, and a sustainable technical foundation
  • Advise Stripe leadership on key technology and product roadmap considerations

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in full time software development roles
  • Comfortable being truly full stack, navigating codebases with different languages and tools
  • Experience working at a startup or a small, fast-moving experimental team within a larger organization
  • Experience as a technical lead for large projects (6+ months in length) including defining the roadmap for complex projects spanning multiple teams and functions
  • Ability to internalize the best ideas from across the organization, humbly setting a vision that others are excited to get behind
  • Experience mentoring and growing senior engineers as their technical leader
  • You care deeply about solving user problems and have great intuition around what developers care about and want from their tools
  • You have hands-on applied ML (model training, deployment to production, etc) OR AI engineering (building products where ML and LLMs are a core piece of the product experience) experience

Preferred qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in full time software development roles
  • You keep up-to-date on the latest in AI engineering practices and research
  • You’ve previously worked on developer tools or developer experience at companies known for having great DX
  • You can move fast but don’t lose sight of the foundations that are needed to build systems of long-term value
  • You are excited about working on a new team with big ambitions and helping to chart the path to achieve them

Hybrid work at Stripe

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $209,800 - $314,800. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
