Staff Engineer, Monitoring Infrastructure

The Monitoring Infrastructure team at Stripe is responsible for the core real time monitoring infrastructure that enables engineering teams at stripe to monitor their services health to achieve world-class availability and latencies as well as seamless scalability. This involved collecting, streaming, persisting operational data, and proving real time alerting and visualizations on top of it. 

The team is just getting started with an ambitious journey to reimagine the e2e monitoring experience (collection, storage, visualization and anomaly detection), on this journey we will collaborate with partners, learn from peers in the industry, leverage (& contribute) to opensource. It is a great opportunity to join a major project early.

We’re looking for an experienced hands-on staff engineer with outstanding technical and leadership skills to work with various teams across the company, understand their pain points, evangelize best practices and drive cross-organizational initiatives to improve the experience of engineers across the company. Ideally, have a background or passion for request tracing systems, time series telemetry platforms, application performance management tools or log management systems. 

You will:

  • Research, design, build, test and operationalize end to end monitoring infrastructure and primitives that will be leveraged into various services. 
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership on multiple fronts (architecture/design, code reviews, quality assurance and incident management) to other engineers at stripe
  • Independently own and drive one or more of our work streams, this include all planning and execution as well as managing the partnerships with other teams. 
  • Deliver value through a strong collaborative approach with multiple customers and stakeholders across Stripe. 
  • Establish and drive adoption of design and coding best practices within your team
  • Define, evangelize and drive reliability best practices and improvements across org boundaries with setting clear measure of success 
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe’s engineering management team
  • Mentor engineers in their technical careers to help them grow

You may be a good fit if you have:

  • 8+ years of professional hands-on software development experience  
  • Hands-on experience designing and building large scale distributed systems 
  • A track record of technically mentoring junior and senior engineers 
  • Customer obsession, ability to articulate and represent customer experience in various forums to drive the right outcome 
  • Demonstrated ability of defining & driving complex initiatives/projects across multiple teams 
  • Proven success with cross-discipline and cross-team collaborations, possess strong conviction and courage skills.
  • Have the ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy, responsibility, and think of yourself as entrepreneurial

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • * Have experience with request tracing systems, time series telemetry platforms, application performance management tools or log management systems. 
    • Genuine interest and/or experience in debugging and troubleshooting complex distributed systems problems. 
    • Familiarity with the common patterns and practices for building reliable services
