Software Engineer, Internationalization

Help bring Stripe to businesses all around the world

Seattle. Remote in North America only

Full time

Stripe’s core mission is to reduce the barriers faced by large and emerging businesses around the world. Language support is one of the most common hurdles faced by entrepreneurs, as well as larger companies looking to enter new markets. Stripe is committed to reducing these hurdles for our users, and is investing in a world-class engineering team to do so.

You will:

  • Partner closely with product teams to develop tooling and processes that enable rapid localization of new products
  • Work closely with our localization teams to understand and improve our existing internationalization tooling and processes
  • Build tools that simplify the process of translating and reviewing site content
  • Help educate engineers within Stripe about our internationalization frameworks and tooling
  • Ensure our non-English-speaking users receive a first class user experience, regardless of their language preferences

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys being a generalist working on the frontend, backend, and anything it takes to solve problems and delight users both internally and externally
  • Has 3+ years professional software engineering experience
  • Has previous i18n engineering experience – particularly with a focus on web or mobile development
  • Takes pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems
  • Is familiar with existing translation management systems (such as SDL Studio, PhraseApp, Memsource, Lokalise, etc.) – and ideally, think you could build a better one yourself
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders spanning multiple roles and timezones
  • Can work with people with non-technical backgrounds to identify problems they have that can be solved with software
  • Holds themselves and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • Thinks about systems and services and write high quality code. We work mostly in Ruby, with some Scala and Go. However, languages can be learned: we care much more about your general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework

You might work on:

  • Building tools that allows translators to see localized content in context
  • Adding localization-readiness checks to our CI pipeline to ensure we ship properly localized products
  • Helping to define and implement a localized user experience for the Stripe Docs and Dashboard

At Stripe, we're looking for people with passion, grit, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and passion will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Stripe, we welcome diverse perspectives and people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions. Join us.
