Senior Mechanical and Industrial Design Engineer

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies, from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups, use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe Terminal helps businesses extend their online presence into the physical world. Our mission is to make it as easy for businesses to accept in-person payments as the Stripe API has made it for online payments. With Terminal, businesses can create flagship retail experiences, extend their websites to pop-up stores, or enable mobile point-of-sale payments at their next event. All of this is built on the Stripe Payments Platform, so businesses can maintain a single view of customers and sales across online and offline channels.

Our hardware engineering team in Taiwan designs and builds the physical payment devices at the heart of that experience, including products such as the Stripe Reader S700 and Stripe Reader M2. We are expanding the team and seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical and Industrial Design Engineer who can own both the structural engineering and aesthetic form language of our next generation of payment terminals. This is a blended role. You will be equally comfortable driving design for manufacturability (DFM) for a plastic enclosure and sketching form concepts that express Stripe's design identity in hardware.

What you'll do

You will lead the industrial and mechanical design of next-generation Stripe Terminal payment devices, shaping their form, feel, usability, and structural performance from early concepts through mass production. You will partner with cross-functional teams and suppliers to deliver manufacturable, high-quality hardware, including enclosure design, color, material, and finish specifications, packaging, validation, and production readiness.

Responsibilities

Industrial design

  • Lead ideation and concept development through rapid hand sketching, digital sketching, and physical foam or 3D-printed models to explore form factors early in the product lifecycle.
  • Define the visual and tactile design language of Terminal hardware, including proportion, form, surface transitions, button feel, and overall product character.
  • Produce photorealistic product renders using KeyShot or similar tools to communicate design intent to cross-functional teams and executive stakeholders.
  • Define and manage color, material, and finish (CMF) specifications. Work directly with suppliers to qualify target surfaces, textures, and coatings.
  • Manage packaging design, working directly with suppliers to qualify final deliverables and the unboxing experience.
  • Apply ergonomics and human factors principles to ensure products are intuitive and comfortable for a diverse range of users and environments.
  • Maintain visual consistency and brand coherence across the Terminal hardware product family, in alignment with Stripe's design identity.

Mechanical engineering

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks or Creo, following professional engineering standards.
  • Hands on experience in mechanical designs and drawings, assess manufacturability, and resolve technical problems.
  • Lead and plan problem-solving activities using scientific approaches, such as tolerance analysis, computer-aided engineering (CAE) and finite element method (FEM) simulations, design of experiments (DOE), and physical prototyping.
  • Independently analyze and verify mechanical designs, identify risks, and propose mitigations.
  • Manage bill of materials (BOM) cost and design schedules from a mechanical engineering perspective.
  • Prepare mechanical engineering deliverables, including BOMs, component specifications, and support for failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) activities.
  • Review Design fixtures and calibration processes for high-precision mechanical assemblies.
  • Verify and qualify components in first-article builds from suppliers, and participate in pilot production.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documents, including specifications, design-for-excellence (DFx) guidelines, technical reports, and gate-review packages.
  • Partner with Quality and Reliability teams to support successful validation outcomes and improve hardware durability standards.
  • Support product compliance and certification activities, including Payment Card Industry (PCI) and regulatory certifications.

Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements listed below. If you meet these requirements, we strongly encourage you to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field.
  • 8+ years of hands-on product design experience spanning mechanical engineering and industrial design, with a portfolio of consumer or commercial hardware products. This includes experience designing consumer-grade plastic enclosures for handheld products, such as smartphones, tablets, or payment terminals, from concept through mass production.
  • Ability to communicate design concepts through hand or digital sketching at the pace of a design conversation, and experience defining CMF specifications with suppliers.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing and mechanical production processes, with direct experience taking industrial design concepts through DFM, tooling, and production.
  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD software. Creo is required, and SolidWorks is a plus. Expertise in creating detailed 2D drawings and performing geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis.
  • Familiarity with mold design, first-article inspection (FAI) processes, and process capability (Cpk) analysis, along with experience managing supplier and factory relationships.
  • Strong written and spoken English and Mandarin communication skills to collaborate directly with suppliers in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China throughout product development and production. Willingness to travel internationally, including to Hong Kong and mainland China, as needed.

Preferred qualifications

  • Proficiency in rendering software, with KeyShot strongly preferred. VRED or Blender experience is also valued.
  • Experience maintaining a coherent design language across a multi-SKU hardware product family or accessory ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with ergonomics methodologies, including grip studies, anthropometric data, and usability evaluations, applied to handheld device design.
  • Experience with point-of-sale hardware, payment terminals, or consumer electronics peripherals.
  • Knowledge of PCI hardware requirements, material properties, and associated manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in thermal calculations and an understanding of plastic material properties.
  • Experience with mechanical simulation tools and metal-part design.
  • Ability to create compelling design presentations for cross-functional and executive audiences, clearly articulating the rationale behind design decisions.

In-office expectations

Office-assigned Stripes in most of our locations are currently expected to spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This expectation may vary depending on role, team and location. For example, Stripes in Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico, Bengaluru, India, and Dublin, Ireland work 100% from the office. Also, some teams have greater in-office attendance requirements, to appropriately support our users and workflows, which the hiring manager will discuss. This approach helps strike a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility when possible.

Pay and benefits

The annual salary range for this role in the primary location is NT$3,200,000 - NT$4,800,000. This range may change if you are hired in another location. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings (“OTE”) range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and specific location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the primary location may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Specific benefits and details about what compensation is included in the salary range listed above will vary depending on the applicant’s location and can be discussed in more detail during the interview process. Benefits/additional compensation for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; retirement plans; health benefits; and wellness stipends.
