Engineering Manager, Infrastructure

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies, from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups, use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe's Infrastructure organization builds and operates the shared platforms that make it possible for engineering teams to build, deploy, run, and scale reliable products. The organization owns foundational capabilities across service networking and discovery, safe feature and configuration changes, data storage and orchestration, and batch computing.

Our platforms support a global engineering audience and power systems at significant scale. This includes the control plane for secure service-to-service communication across tens of thousands of microservices, service and feature deployment infrastructure that helps teams introduce and recover from changes safely, infrastructure for running Stripe's containerized services, and data platforms for storage, pipeline orchestration, and large-scale processing. Our batch compute platforms support technologies including Apache Airflow, Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, Apache Hadoop, and Apache Celeborn.

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead or strongly influence teams working on business-critical infrastructure with broad internal adoption. You will balance reliability, scalability, security, developer experience, and operational rigor while helping Stripe move quickly with confidence. You will partner closely with product, security, data, support, and adjacent infrastructure leaders to set direction, resolve cross-team dependencies, and turn recurring needs into durable platform capabilities.

What you'll do

As an Engineering Manager at Stripe, you will operate with full autonomy across a complex, high-impact area of our infrastructure. Your scope extends beyond a single team. You lead or strongly influence multiple engineering teams, execute parallel high-priority workstreams, and develop senior engineering talent. You set direction, align stakeholders, make decisions that hold up over time, and deliver results without close direction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead with scope and autonomy by driving impact across multiple teams or a significant infrastructure area independently, translating organizational goals into concrete execution plans, and delivering results across parallel workstreams
  • Define strategy and roadmap for your area, anticipating internal user needs, technical challenges, reliability risks, and business priorities, then communicating a clear plan to your team and senior leadership
  • Develop senior talent by coaching senior engineers and emerging leaders, creating meaningful stretch opportunities, and giving candid feedback that improves individual and team performance
  • Drive cross-functional alignment with product, security, data, support, and adjacent engineering teams, resolving ambiguity at team boundaries and aligning stakeholders around shared priorities
  • Hire and scale the team by attracting, developing, and retaining senior engineering talent while maintaining a high hiring bar and building an inclusive, high-performing organization
  • Operate with rigor by setting high standards for reliability, availability, scalability, incident response, and engineering craft, and by addressing systemic issues that affect internal users across Stripe
  • Partner with Staff engineers on architecture decisions involving distributed systems, service discovery, configuration propagation, production change management, data processing, and internal platform design

Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience with 10+ years of software development experience
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience with a demonstrated track record of autonomous impact as an engineering manager
  • Experience leading high-complexity engineering teams that deliver multiple difficult, high-impact workstreams in parallel
  • Proven ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority, communicating a clear direction that others follow
  • Meaningful recruiting experience, including a track record of attracting and developing senior engineering talent
  • Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture decisions and hold teams to a high standard for product quality, reliability, and engineering craft

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience building or operating high-availability distributed systems, internal platforms, or developer infrastructure used by a broad engineering audience
  • Experience with service networking, service discovery, service mesh, feature flags, configuration management, progressive delivery, deployment tooling, or production change governance
  • Experience with data infrastructure, including large-scale storage, data orchestration, batch compute, or processing frameworks such as Apache Airflow, Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, Apache Hadoop, or Apache Celeborn
  • Experience improving reliability through observability, health checks, incident response, automated recovery, capacity planning, or reducing the impact of production changes
  • Experience designing secure access controls, audit systems, approval workflows, or governance mechanisms for production infrastructure
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and distributed systems technologies such as Amazon Web Services, DynamoDB, Aurora, S3, Ruby, Go, Java, or Python
  • A product mindset for internal platforms, including empathy for internal users, a focus on self-service, and a commitment to making safe workflows straightforward to adopt

In-office expectations

Office-assigned Stripes in most of our locations are currently expected to spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This expectation may vary depending on role, team and location. For example, Stripes in Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico, Bengaluru, India, and Dublin, Ireland work 100% from the office. Also, some teams have greater in-office attendance requirements, to appropriately support our users and workflows, which the hiring manager will discuss. This approach helps strike a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility when possible.
