Risk Standards Strategist

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

As Stripe continues to develop innovative products that serve businesses of all sizes around the world, risk will increase in complexity and scale. The User Risk Strategy org protects and advances Stripe’s business, brand, and mission by building and deploying market-leading policies and practices that instill user and partner trust in Stripe while enabling business growth.

What you’ll do

Under the User Risk Strategy org, you will be part of the Ecosystem Risk Strategy Team, part of Stripe’s “First Line of Defense” function within the Risk organization, driving the frameworks that dictate who Stripe does business with, on what terms, and how enforcement is executed at scale. The Ecosystem Strategy Team focuses on Stripe’s positioning and standards within the broader payments and risk ecosystem — including card network supportability, industry-body engagement, regulatory horizon scanning, and the overarching risk framework that governs Stripe’s standards. Risk Strategists on the Ecosystem Risk Strategy Team work to make sure URS is properly calibrated to ensure we are avoiding (and taking) the proper risks. We work with cross-functional partners (XFN) to monitor and mitigate risk related to card network rules and BIN sponsor requirements. We interact with Risk Partnerships, Credit, Legal, Fraud, and other XFN teams to ensure our standards are properly calibrated.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about navigating ambiguity, engaging with internal and external stakeholders, enabling business growth while balancing risk, and is skilled at identifying ways to improve user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive risk strategy for company-level strategic initiatives, including partnering with Stripe’s product, legal, operations, sales, and partnerships teams to solve risk problems and ensure a positive experience for Stripe’s users
  • Perform research and analysis to assess Stripe’s current risk performance and develop and prioritize long-term strategic plans for future growth
  • Enable user onboarding to safely grow at scale, continuously optimizing for efficiency and effectiveness, and staying hyper focused on a positive user experience
  • Challenge the status quo and provide multiple alternative solutions and key execution criteria
  • Represent Stripe in external engagements with our most critical partners and customers
  • Execute special projects/ad hoc analyses as initiatives, products, risks, and opportunities are constantly evolving

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 8+ years of professional experience, preferably in Financial Services, Payments or fintech industries
  • Experience in a related role (risk, compliance and/or product enablement)
  • Experience in developing risk strategies and solutions and working with technical (product and engineering) and operations teams to implement them
  • Ability to distill complex, ambiguous risk and policy problems into clear, concise, and reliable guidance for internal stakeholders and Stripe users
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including experience influencing product/engineering, sales, data science, and operations teams; proven ability to take complex issues and turn them into actionable next steps, hold others accountable, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated track record of deriving insights from complex or technical problem spaces and evangelizing actionable product recommendations
  • Familiarity with legal, credit, and fraud risk
  • Strong executive presence, including experience engaging with leadership

Preferred qualifications

  • * Experience with data querying languages (e.g., SQL) and proficiency in quantitative analysis geared towards drawing actionable insights from complex datasets
    • Advanced degree in law, business, policy or other related field
    • Experience in translating business requirements to technical configurations
    • Experience in a client-facing role managing relationships with large, global, and complex organizations.

Hybrid work at Stripe

This role is available either in an office or a remote location (35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

In-office expectations

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

Working remotely at Stripe

A remote location is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently live or plan to live.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $123,600 - $185,400. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
