Millions of companies—from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
Stripe's mission is to increase the GDP of the internet. We build the most powerful and flexible tools for running an internet business. Our tax team works with Stripes across the company to develop an efficient tax structure as our international business scales and expands into new markets. This role focuses on Stripe Managed Payments (SMP), our Merchant of Record (MoR) product, which simplifies global selling by handling tax, fraud, and compliance on behalf of our users. We're looking for a seasoned tax professional to navigate the complexities of shifting tax liability and help lead this effort. You'll be based in the US and report to the Indirect Tax advisory lead.
• Be an indirect tax subject matter expert (global VAT/GST) for our Merchant of Record product, specifically managing the complexity of shifting tax liability via marketplace and agency rules
• Support Stripe's expansion into new international markets, ensuring SMP remains compliant with varying global tax regulations
• Participate in policy matters affecting indirect taxes internationally
• Collaborate with the international indirect tax compliance team and the international accounting teams on VAT/GST compliance, assisting with the ongoing enhancement of the indirect tax compliance processes
• Support management of indirect tax audits and other indirect tax matters involving tax authorities internationally
• Work with other tax team members and product and engineering teams to help define requirements and collaborate on the design and build of tax solutions for the MoR product
• Promote indirect tax awareness and knowledge including training and liaising with business and tax partners on changes to indirect tax legislation, systems, policies, and processes
We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
• 4–6 years of relevant indirect tax knowledge, laws, and regulations
• Bachelor's degree and professional qualification in tax or law
• Previous in-house experience within a multinational business and either legal or accountancy firm experience
• Experience with indirect taxes as it relates to the distribution of digital services
• Proven experience navigating the complexities of VAT/GST for a digital service provider acting as a Marketplace or Merchant of Record
• An advanced degree
• Experience working in technology, payments, or financial services
• Experience working in a high-growth, rapidly scaling environment
• A willingness to work with a diverse crew of tax nerds who care deeply about Stripe's tax issues and each other
