Managing Editor – Works in Progress

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Works in Progress is a magazine of scientific, technological and economic progress with team members in the United States and the United Kingdom. We are a part of Stripe.

What you’ll do

Works in Progress needs a full time managing editor, based in the United States. This person will sit within our existing editing team to manage our pipeline, newsletter and social media accounts, edit drafts and work with other editors on articles, and help with commissioning new articles. If you have relevant subject matter expertise there will be scope for writing, but this isn’t a core part of the role.

Responsibilities

Managing our pipeline:

  • Tracking forthcoming pieces, managing our communication with authors, and helping the team plan its editing and output;
  • Managing WIP’s Twitter account;
  • Managing WIP’s Substack; and
  • Managing print production and distribution in North America (with support).

Editing:

  • Helping writers to craft and develop their ideas, providing feedback throughout the writing and editing process;
  • Editing articles to make sure everything we publish meets our standards and style – being extremely clear, logically consistent, interesting, and thought-provoking; and
  • Working with other editors (internal and external) on our articles, overseeing their work.

Commissioning:

  • Commissioning new articles by US-based authors and on topics that are relevant to our US audiences;
  • Network-building in the United States, finding new authors and new topics to commission articles on;
  • Representing Works in Progress at relevant events; and
  • Planning and running events in the US (with support).

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Has experience in full-time editing for a publication with multiple contributors (a magazine, a newsletter, or similar), or some other demonstrable track record as an editor of articles or books similar to Works in Progress.
  • Has managed a large and complex pipeline of long-form articles, books or similar over a number of years, from different contributors.
  • Is familiar with Works in Progress’s existing work and some of its subject areas.

Preferred qualifications

  • Is a very good editor of long-form non-fiction writing.
  • Can find and suggest new authors across a wide range of subjects and judge whether article topics are interesting to people who already know about a field.
  • Is organised and reliable.
  • Writes clearly and simply.
  • Is very good at expressing complex ideas clearly and simply.

You must be based in the United States. New York, Washington DC or San Francisco are preferred. We cannot support relocation for this role.

Hybrid work at Stripe

This role is available either in an office or a remote location (typically, 35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

A remote location, in most cases, is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently or plan to live.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $136,800 - $205,200. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
