Collaborating closely with our Engineering, Product, and Operations teams, this team serves as a trusted advisor, driving favorable risk outcomes across all stages, from product development to strategic business decisions.

What you’ll do

The Lead in this role will help shape and become an expert in Stripe’s risk management practices, covering areas such as fraud, credit, liquidity, partnerships, and brand risks. They will stay updated on emerging risk issues, economic trends, competitors, and global matters, bringing valuable external insights. Additionally, they will identify and strategize opportunities to scale risk management for our products, utilizing automation, operations, and resource allocation effectively.

We're looking for a seasoned professional for the role of Consumer Risk Lead, possessing strong expertise in risk management, business strategy, product development, and go-to-market experience with consumer businesses. This individual will excel in solution definition, possess clear communication skills, take ownership of metrics, and effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization.

The Consumer Risk Lead will play a pivotal role in supporting the launch and growth of Stripe's consumer-facing products, such as Link, our fast-checkout solution supporting various payment methods. With significant ambitions in the consumer space, this role ensures the establishment of a robust consumer risk management framework to support our new consumer products at scale, marking a critical addition to our team.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Product and specialist Risk teams to identify, quantify, and mitigate risks, facilitating the launch of new products and managing existing ones.
  • Act as the Risk Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Stripe’s Network business, identifying risk trends and translating them into scalable solutions.
  • Identify scaling opportunities as Stripe's consumer businesses expand, particularly in Fraud, Credit, and Supportability.
  • Provide unique insights to guide product strategy by monitoring risk trends across various areas.
  • Drive long-term risk management strategies for product launches, ensuring appropriate controls and mitigants are in place.
  • Communicate risk-related updates and strategies to the broader Risk organization.
  • Own the Product Risk operating model, ensuring alignment with Product leadership and other cross-functional teams.
  • Work with Product, Engineering, and Data Science to develop metrics and improve risk observability.
  • Assess product risk performance and develop strategic plans for future growth.
  • Analyze data to identify emerging trends and inform decision-making.
  • Ensure safe product scaling by optimizing efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership to a team of Product Risk Strategists, supporting their career development.
  • Stay updated on industry trends through engagement and research, particularly focusing on Consumer risk.
  • Execute special projects and analyses as needed in response to evolving initiatives, risks, and opportunities.

Who you are

Minimum requirements

  • 8+ years experience, adept in constructing and managing consumer risk and fraud prevention systems for industries like consumer payments, BNPLs, and consumer lending. Ideally has experience in companies that maintain direct consumer relationships and must adhere to P2P regulations.
  • Direct technical expertise in developing strategies, frameworks, analytics, and controls aimed at mitigating consumer fraud and reducing losses within Stripe and its ecosystem
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adept at translating complex issues into actionable steps.
  • Ownership mentality with a track record of accountability and driving ambitious goals.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, using quantitative analysis and visualization to inform business decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Proven program management skills, capable of building and scaling programs from scratch, with a knack for organization and the willingness to challenge teams and oneself.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex ideas concisely to various audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Comfortable operating in an ambiguous and rapidly changing environment with shifting priorities  (this is a must!).

Hybrid work at Stripe

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $158,000 - $237,000. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
