Staff Engineer, Developer Infrastructure

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Compliance Foundations team builds fundamental infrastructure to help Stripe meet its compliance obligations. Our compliance stack integrates with a broad range of  infrastructure technologies and Stripe’s products. We work closely with teams in infrastructure and product engineering to ensure that compliance technology at Stripe is efficient, scalable, and predictable. Applying engineering approaches to compliance concepts is a relatively new field in the industry, and Stripe and our team are leading the way at building solutions in this space to help both Stripe and its customers.

What you’ll do

You will join as a Technical Lead for one of the most impactful teams at Stripe. Your role will involve designing and building solutions that address the use cases of various compliance programs, ranging from purely security-focused to those that necessitate oversight of Stripe’s financials. This position requires a deep understanding of a wide array of Stripe’s technologies and the ability to quickly develop effective partnerships with key stakeholders in engineering, security, finance, and legal teams.

You will oversee the development of solutions that may be created “from scratch,” built on in-house platforms, or leverage third-party solutions. By collaborating with the team’s technical leaders, you will ensure the software your team builds meets the needs of Stripe and its customers.

We are a highly effective team that consistently delivers high-impact results while genuinely caring for one another. We expect you to bring your curiosity and critical thinking skills to this challenging domain.

We are looking for individuals with a strong background in designing and delivering high-performance infrastructure products for both internal and external customers. We would love to hear from you whether you have spent your entire career in infrastructure or are looking to apply your skill set to the compliance engineering domain for the first time.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Engineering Managers to create roadmaps that deliver milestones toward a cohesive compliance engineering vision, in conjunction with stakeholders in Security, Infrastructure, Finance, Legal, and business teams.
  • Work with various stakeholders to meet business objectives, adapting to the operating models and preferred styles of other teams.
  • Partner with Stripe leaders to design and drive the development of compliance engineering components, setting clear technical direction for your team and its partners.
  • Empower the engineering team to achieve high levels of technical compliance, reliability, and efficiency while fostering curiosity and innovation.
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as part of Stripe’s engineering leadership team.
  • Leverage your experience and critical thinking to develop pragmatic, sustainable solutions.
  • Craft a compelling vision that balances compliance requirements with business needs, advocating for this balance effectively.
  • Build a great customer experience for developers and business partners using your products.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 10+ years of technical experience or 7+ years in the security and compliance engineering field
  • 5+ years in a strategic technical leadership role
  • Hands-on experience building infrastructure and products for internal or external customers
  • Proven track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that accelerate business growth
  • Ability to adjust conversations from high-level discussions to detailed coding
  • Thrives on a high level of autonomy and responsibility
  • Clear and persuasive writing and in-person communication
  • Empathetic to customer needs, but visionary enough to not just deliver a faster horse
  • Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, determination, and a growth mindset
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people, genuinely caring for each other and contributing to high level of psychological safety for all team members and partner

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience building and operating SLO-based infrastructures.
  • Proven track record of developing security and compliance programs within larger organizations.
  • Familiarity with the security, privacy, or legal aspects of engineering.
  • Involvement in the design and/or implementation of security and compliance frameworks, including but not limited to GDPR, PCI-DSS, SOC, SOX, ISO-27001, HIPAA, and DORA.

It’s not expected that you’ll have deep expertise in every dimension above, but you should be interested in learning any of the areas that are less familiar.

Hybrid work at Stripe

This role is available either in an office or a remote location (typically, 35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

A remote location, in most cases, is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently or plan to live.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $224,000 - $336,000. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
