Engineering Manager, Service Ecosystem Sustainability

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Service Platform organization within Stripe focuses on enabling Stripe engineers to write and ship useful services that efficiently leverage infrastructure capabilities. We do so by building effective frameworks and libraries on top of the core infrastructure platforms that abstract away challenging infrastructure complexities and promote best practices. We are forming a new Service Ecosystem Sustainability team within this organization. This team will be accountable for the health, consistency, and modernity of the service infrastructure ecosystem.

This is a critical cross-functional team that will collaborate closely across infrastructure and product teams. This is challenging and impactful work that is crucial for reducing fragmentation and improving safe and consistent usage of our infrastructure.

What you’ll do

As an Engineering Manager within the Service Platform organization, you will lead the Ecosystem Sustainability team and help guide our service infrastructure sustainability roadmap. You will collaborate with other infrastructure teams to improve consistent usage of our abstractions. You will also interact with product teams to understand their pain points and requirements to inform our roadmap and prioritization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team with a significant impact on the company’s infrastructure initiatives.
  • Work with leaders across the company to influence and drive toward the longer term vision of Stripe’s SOA roadmap and support this roadmap through various sustainability initiatives.
  • Empower the engineering team to achieve a high level of technical productivity, reliability, and simplicity.
  • Encourage a healthy work environment that’s both challenging and supportive.
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe’s engineering management team.

Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply.

Minimum requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience managing teams that shipped and operated distributed system infrastructure.
  • Passionate about user experience and unlocking productivity for engineers.
  • Effective at working cross-functionally, communicating effectively and coordinating hard decisions, tradeoffs.
  • Thrives with a high degree of agency and responsibility in an ambiguous environment.
  • Technical acumen to drive clarity with staff engineers about architecture and technical strategic decisions.
  • Experience communicating and collaborating effectively across globally distributed teams

Preferred qualifications

  • Reason and operate from first principles, on both management and technical aspects of the position, balanced with pragmatism depending on context.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for different audiences (leadership, users, company-wide).
  • Experience across a variety of infrastructure systems like distributed databases, service frameworks, async processing services etc.
  • Experience at productively leading hybrid (in-office + remote) teams.

In-office expectations

Office-assigned Stripes in most of our locations are currently expected to spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This expectation may vary depending on role, team and location. For example, Stripes in our Bucharest, Romania site have an 80% in-office expectation, and those in Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico and Bengaluru, India work 100% from the office. Also, some teams have greater in-office attendance requirements, to appropriately support our users and workflows, which the hiring manager will discuss. This approach helps strike a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility when possible.

Pay and benefits

Stripe does not yet include pay ranges in job postings in every country. Stripe strongly values pay transparency and is working toward pay transparency globally.
