  10. FAQs about BNPL in Spain

According to Worldpay’s Global Payments Report, 3% of online purchases made in Spain in 2025 were paid for using buy now, pay later (BNPL) services.

Given that the Spanish National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) valued ecommerce revenue in Spain at over €114.8 billion that same year, it can be inferred that BNPL accounted for nearly €3.4 billion. However, the actual volume of online purchases made with deferred or installment payments is higher, since the Global Payments Report does not count transactions financed through digital wallets and bank cards as BNPL.

In this guide, we explain what buy now, pay later options are, how they work, and the benefits of implementing this highly flexible payment method in your business.

Key takeaways

  • BNPL is a flexible payment method that allows customers to defer payment or split the cost of their purchases into multiple installments without additional fees.
  • BNPL providers in Spain typically advance the full sales amount to the business at the time of purchase. This is so that the deferral or splitting of payments into installments does not affect the business’s cash flow.
  • There are many BNPL providers, such as Aplazame and seQura, as well as solutions from Spanish banks, among which plazox stands out.
  • In Spain, specific regulations govern the interest rates for BNPL services and the obligations of BNPL providers.

What is BNPL and what is it used for?

The buy now, pay later model is a financing option available for both online and in-store purchases. When purchasing a product or service using BNPL, the customer does not pay the full amount at the time of purchase, but rather pays it later, either as a lump sum or in installments over the following weeks or months.

This option offers customers greater payment flexibility, allowing them to make installments at a pace that suits them. In addition, many buy now, pay later providers offer interest-free financing solutions, charging fees only in the event of late payments.

Whether payment begins at the time of purchase or is deferred, BNPL providers in Spain generally transfer the full purchase amount to the business from day one. This way, the business does not have to wait for the customer to make each individual payment, so its cash flow remains unaffected.

How BNPL works in Spain

While each BNPL provider has its own distinct features, the way their financial solutions work tends to be the same: intuitive, fast, and secure. We’ve prepared a summary of how buy now, pay later works in Spain:

  • Step 1: Integration of BNPL solutions
The business integrates one or more BNPL providers into its online store. With Stripe Payments, this process is completed in a matter of minutes, as you can activate the payment methods you wish to accept with a single click from your Dashboard.
  • Step 2: Payment method selection
When the customer proceeds to checkout, the various BNPL options and other payment methods offered by the ecommerce site are displayed.
  • Step 3: Choice of payment plan
The customer selects the BNPL provider and the option that best suits their needs, such as a deferred lump-sum payment or installment payments.
  • Step 4: Payment settlement
In most cases, the business receives the full payment up front, from which the BNPL provider’s and the payment gateway’s fees are deducted.
  • Step 5: Lump-sum or installment payments
The customer pays the BNPL provider according to the terms of their payment plan; the provider typically does not charge interest or additional fees unless a payment is late.

Leading BNPL providers in Spain

Due to the high demand for this payment method, an increasing number of retailers in Spain have implemented BNPL services: according to estimates from the April 2026 report by the Finance and Technology Observatory (OFT), 20% to 35% of online stores and 40% to 60% of large retailers offer a buy now, pay later option. Let’s take a look at the key features of some of the leading providers:

Alma

This BNPL solution is highly flexible, as it can be integrated into online stores, point-of-sale (POS) systems, call centers, and home services. Just one year after its launch in Spain, Alma had already implemented its BNPL system in more than 350 retailers.

Aplazame

Aplazame is a BNPL service developed by the Spanish bank WiZink that allows purchase amounts to be split into up to 36 installments, enabling consumers to pay for goods in very manageable amounts. In addition, it features an option that allows businesses to offer their customers 0% financing campaigns by absorbing a portion of the financing cost.

Billie

Billie is a buy now, pay later platform that enables acceptance of B2B payments in three installments, although it also offers other options—such as Pay Later—which allows business customers to select their own payment terms with suppliers.

Klarna

Payment in three or four installments is one of Klarna’s most popular options, although it also offers a Pay in 30 option. In addition, for high-value purchases, it offers six- or 12-month financing. This flexibility has led to great success in Spain: as of January 2026, Klarna had 2.3 million active users.

Mondu

Mondu is a BNPL platform designed for B2B payments. This provider allows users to defer bill payments for 30 and 90 days, via either bank transfer or direct debit. It also offers the option of making account-to-account (A2A) payments without intermediaries.

Oney

Oney allows customers to make purchases of up to €3,000 and pay for them in three, four, six, 10, or 12 installments using a credit or debit card of their choice. As of July 2026, Oney had 1.5 million customers in Spain.

Scalapay

Scalapay offers a buy now, pay later service with payment plans ranging from three to four installments, depending on the purchase amount or customer preference. In 2024, Spain accounted for 14% of Scalapay’s total revenue.

seQura

Based in Spain, seQura is a BNPL provider that allows customers to split their purchases into three, six, nine, or 12 installments. After consistently exceeding €100 million in annual revenue in Spain, seQura decided to roll out its BNPL solution in other countries, such as Germany and the US.

Younited Pay

Offering BNPL options is a strategic decision, but the actual impact depends largely on how the BNPL options are presented to the customer at checkout.

Stripe Payments incorporates smart display logic that automatically shows the most relevant payment methods for each customer based on their location, the order amount, and the device they’re using. This ensures that buy now, pay later options appear at the exact moment and in the context where they’re most likely to increase conversion.

In addition to this checkout optimization, it’s also much simpler to enable payment methods: you can start accepting payments via Klarna, Alma, seQura, Scalapay, Billie, or Mondu with a single click from the Stripe Dashboard—no additional contracts or integrations required. All payments—whether deferred, installment-based, or instant—are consolidated on a single platform, making it easier to track sales and manage cash flow.

Benefits of BNPL for businesses

To reap the benefits of buy now, pay later, the number of Spanish businesses allowing customers to pay using these solutions has steadily increased: from 2021 to 2024, the BNPL market recorded a compound annual growth rate of 19.5%, according to the Spain Buy Now Pay Later Business Report 2025. The same report reveals that the integration of these flexible payment services into Spanish ecommerce sites is accelerating rapidly. Let’s look at what’s driving this trend:

  • Increased conversion rates
  • Increased average order value
  • Increased revenue: According to a 2024 Stripe study, businesses experience 14% revenue growth thanks to BNPL
  • Enhanced business protection against fraud and insolvency through preapproval verification
  • Improved cash flow management with payment methods that allow the business to receive the full amount as soon as the purchase is confirmed

These benefits outweigh the drawbacks—such as higher fees compared to card payments or digital wallet payments, the potential need to manage overdue installments or defaults, and anticipated regulatory tightening that could worsen the terms BNPL providers offer to contracting businesses.

Regulation of BNPL in Spain

According to a study published by Oney in 2025, nearly 24% of Spanish customers used BNPL-style payment methods over the previous year. Given such a significant volume, it was only a matter of time before specific regulations were put in place in Spain.

In November 2023, Directive (EU) 2023/2225 entered into force, replacing Directive 2008/48/EC and expanding the scope of consumer credit to explicitly include BNPL solutions. In January 2026, the government initiated the transposition of this regulation with a draft bill that limits interest rates on consumer credit (including buy now, pay later options) and mandates the assessment of consumer creditworthiness to prevent overindebtedness.

The Bank of Spain (BdE) has warned about overindebtedness on several occasions. For example, in April 2024, the BdE’s Director of Supervision identified poor explanations provided to customers and insufficient precontractual information as two of the major problems with the BNPL model.

Faced with this lack of transparency, Spanish banks have developed their own buy now, pay later solutions: in 2021, plazox—a BNPL solution for credit card payments—was launched. Meanwhile, the Spanish Card and Payment System (STMP), in collaboration with Spanish banks, will soon launch plazox cero, another financing option offering three interest-free installments. These new platforms, combined with regulatory changes, aim to increase the security and oversight of BNPL options in order to enhance trust and protection for both businesses and consumers.

Sectors with the highest volume of BNPL payments

Many companies have already adopted BNPL solutions, particularly those in sectors known for offering high-priced products. Below are some of the sectors with the highest volume of transactions paid for using buy now, pay later:

Travel reservations

A simple weekend getaway can entail an outlay of several hundred euros, depending on the chosen destination. Buy now, pay later solutions allow for payment to be deferred or split into installments, making it easier to book in advance and take advantage of discounts, even without the necessary funds available at the time of booking.

40% of Spaniards who defer payments for their purchases using methods such as BNPL do so to finance travel, according to data collected by BNP Paribas.

Luxury goods

The high price of luxury goods poses a barrier for many people. Buy now, pay later solutions democratize access to products such as jewelry and premium services.

Nearly half of Spaniards have used BNPL and other installment payment options for purchases exceeding €1,000, according to the STMP website.

Fashion products

Clothing store purchases tend to be more impulsive than those in other sectors: the Smart Fashion Report reveals that 65.8% of Spanish consumers make impulse purchases of fashion items after finding a good online promotion.

BNPL payment options allow customers to take advantage of limited-time offers even when they don’t have the necessary funds available at the time of purchase. According to Nexdigm’s Spain BNPL Market Outlook to 2030 report, fashion and apparel constituted the leading category by BNPL sales volume in 2024.

Electronic devices

Electronic devices are typically replaced periodically, whether due to obsolescence or breakage. In these situations, covering the full cost of a computer or cell phone in a single payment might prove unfeasible, leading many consumers to turn to BNPL solutions.

As the Capterra study indicates, electronic products represent the second-largest nonessential category by BNPL payment volume.

Furniture

Furnishing a home requires a significant financial outlay that not all households can afford. In such cases, BNPL solutions make it easier to purchase without straining the household budget. According to the Capterra study, the third-largest nonessential category by BNPL payment volume is home accessories and furniture.

Accepting BNPL payments through services such as those mentioned above can boost your business’s revenue, as the ability to defer payments interest-free encourages customers to complete their purchases. With Stripe Payments, your business can accept over 100 payment methods, including buy now, pay later options.
