Libération builds the future of digital subscriptions with Stripe

Libération, France's leading progressive daily newspaper, has partnered with Stripe to build a new subscription billing and payment system. With payment methods its readers prefer, sharper visibility into subscriber activity and higher conversion and authorisation rates, the newspaper is equipping itself to reach 200,000 subscribers by 2030.

Founded in 1973 by Jean-Paul Sartre, Libération has grown into one of France's leading daily newspapers over the past 50 years. Today, the newspaper is investing in its future, with a modern payment and billing system built on Stripe.

After integrating Stripe Billing, Stripe Payments and Stripe Checkout with Elements in 2025, Libération is positioned to continue growing its readership through flexible subscription options, digital-first payment methods and improved data and analytics capabilities. In the past 12 months, Libération's subscriber growth is up 7%.

"Digital subscriptions now account for more than 30% of Libération's revenue, making payments a strategic part of our business rather than just a transaction. We need to provide readers with a seamless and secure subscription experience while giving our teams the flexibility to innovate quickly. Stripe helps us achieve both objectives, from acquiring new subscribers to optimising recurring payments," said Amandine Bascoul-Romeu, CEO at Libération.

An integrated platform for payments and billing

To support its growth strategy, Libération needed to replace its legacy billing partner with a platform that could support rapid product innovation, provide better visibility into subscription performance and simplify day-to-day operations across marketing, customer service, finance and engineering teams.

Initially, Libération considered using separate partners for different parts of its payments and billing system. But with Stripe, it combined Billing and Payments into one unified platform. This approach is more cost-efficient, reduces administrative complexity by creating a simpler dashboard and processes and more easily integrates with other tools Libération relies on.

By adopting Billing, Libération can quickly test offers, launch new subscription plans and manage recurring revenue while giving its engineering team the flexibility to build and iterate faster using Stripe's APIs and documentation.

"Moving off our legacy billing stack onto a single Stripe platform removed a huge amount of operational friction. But what really changed the game was how quickly our engineers got behind the product itself. Between the quality of the documentation and the developer tools, the teams genuinely enjoy working with Stripe, and when everyone is convinced by the tool, they become the driving force rather than just adopting it," said Lucas Delcroix, CTO of Libération.

And with Payments processing those subscription payments, Libération also has access to consolidated billing and payment data through the Stripe Dashboard. That gives marketing, customer service and finance teams a real-time view into how subscriptions and billing are tracking against key performance targets.

A flexible, intuitive checkout experience for digital-first readers

To connect with a younger, digital-first audience, Libération designed a new checkout experience using Checkout with Elements, a UI component for collecting payment details and displaying relevant payment methods.

With a single integration of the payment element, Libération enabled credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and SEPA Direct Debit without requiring additional development work. To further optimise recurring revenue, the newspaper uses Stripe Smart Retries, which leverages AI to identify the best moment to retry failed subscription payments up to eight times within a month, helping Libération recover revenue while reducing involuntary churn.

To further optimise its checkout, Libération adopted Stripe's Payments Intelligence Suite, a set of AI-powered optimisations to boost payment success rate and revenue. With Authorisation Boost, the company can maximise acceptance rates through features such as real-time retries and issuer-optimised preferences for authorisation requests. Libération also uses Stripe Radar to prevent fraudulent transactions and Stripe 3DS to seamlessly authenticate customers at checkout.

A digital-first future for a historic publication

Libération has already seen improvements from its modernised checkout system: conversion rates are up 15%, and authorisation rates have reached 96% for three months. That's a significant improvement over the authorisation rates the paper saw from its previous payment processor, which sometimes dipped as low as 81% for recurring payments.

These gains show how a modern financial infrastructure – designed to work better for both readers and internal teams – has positioned Libération for sustainable, long-term revenue growth.
