Bizum is a payment tool built into online banking apps that lets you send and receive money instantly, securely, and easily—just by entering the recipient’s phone number.

Since its debut in 2016, the service has steadily climbed, handling 2.5 million transactions per day in 2023 and hitting a record 4.8 million in a single day in November 2024. This broad usage has made Bizum one of the top choices for instant money transfers in Spain.

As Bizum has grown, it has also updated its transaction limits, including the maximum amount per transfer, as well as the frequency and value that can be sent. While these caps mainly apply to personal users, each bank can set its own rules for business accounts. This article covers all the key points you need to know about Bizum’s upper thresholds if you plan to accept it as a payment method for your business.

What is the maximum transfer amount on Bizum?

Transfers between individuals using Bizum are subject to caps set by the service. However, each bank can set its extra limits—both maximum and minimum—as long as they stay within Bizum’s overall guidelines:

  • Maximum amount per transaction: €1,000
  • Minimum amount per transaction: €0.50

There are also additional daily and monthly maximums to consider:

  • Maximum amount a user can receive per day: €2,000
  • Maximum amount a user can send per day: €2,000
  • Maximum number of transfers a user can receive per month: 60 transactions
  • Maximum amount a user can send per month: €5,000

Please note that Bizum’s limits apply only to person-to-person (P2P) transactions, and banks might choose to enforce stricter thresholds. For instance, Openbank—Stripe’s banking partner for handling Bizum payments—allows transfers up to €1,000, matching Bizum’s limit, while other financial institutions, such as CaixaBank, set a lower cap of €500. It’s best to check directly with your provider to understand the exact terms that affect your situation.

What is the daily transaction limit on Bizum?

Bizum doesn’t restrict the number of daily transactions an individual can make, as long as the total doesn’t go over €2,000 per day and the recipient hasn’t gotten more than 60 in the past month.

Just like with Bizum’s maximum transfer amount, some institutions could set their own daily or monthly limits on the number of operations. For example, B100 restricts customers to 60 payments sent per month, although Bizum’s own rules place that cap exclusively to funds received.

For multiple transactions—including sending money to several people simultaneously or requesting a split remittance—Bizum allows you to include up to 30 users in a single operation.

These limits don’t apply to payments made to businesses or donations to nonprofits, since corporate account terms can differ and depend on each bank’s specific policies.

What happens if these limits are exceeded on Bizum?

If a transaction is outside the set limits—such as being under €0.50, exceeding the upper amount per transfer, or if the recipient has already received 60 payments that month—it will be automatically declined. In such cases, the user gets a notification stating that the exchange couldn’t be completed.

These caps are designed to promote responsible use of the platform and help protect people from potential misuse. If you run a business, be sure to request Bizum for businesses or freelancers through your bank, so you can operate without the restrictions that apply to personal accounts.

Are the limits on Bizum the same for individuals and businesses?

The limits that apply to payments between individuals do not govern remittances at merchants, provided that the company has indicated that its Bizum account is for business use.

While it doesn’t impose operation limits for merchant remittances, banks can set their maximum amounts. For instance, CaixaBank caps Bizum online charges at €1,500 per transaction, while Banco Santander permits up to €15,000.

You can quickly start accepting Bizum payments in your store by using a gateway such as Stripe Payments. By integrating Payments, you can accept more than 100 checkout methods, including digital wallets, one-click payments, Bizum, and other local options, along with credit and debit cards.

What happens if a purchase exceeds Bizum’s maximum amount?

As mentioned earlier, Bizum itself doesn’t set caps for businesses, but the banks that provide it for businesses and freelancers might impose their own. If an order exceeds the threshold set by the provider, it’s best to turn off the Bizum pay option to prevent the transaction from being declined.

For example, if you use CaixaBank, you must hide Bizum as a pay option at checkout for sales over €1,500, since that’s their limit for online Bizum transactions. If you’re using the Stripe Payments gateway, the system automatically displays the payment methods most likely to result in a successful sale, so you don’t need to set the eligibility rules yourself.
