Getting paid for your hard work can be one of the most satisfying parts of running your business. On the surface, receiving payouts from sales might seem straightforward: customers pay you in exchange for the goods or services your business provides, and those funds are deposited into your account.

Behind the scenes, however, a payment’s journey from a customer’s bank to yours relies on a range of actors and technologies. That’s where payouts from a payment processor like Stripe can make a big difference for businesses.

Below, we’ll cover what payouts are and what you should know about them, as a business that uses Stripe.

What is a payout?

A payout is the movement of a business’s payments earnings in its Stripe balance to its central storage account, which is often an external account or a financial account through Stripe Treasury. Stripe integrates with payment networks globally to ensure that funds are delivered reliably and on-time.

What is Stripe’s payout schedule?

Your payout schedule refers to how frequently funds from your transactions are paid out to your bank account or settle within Stripe. After your first payout, subsequent payouts will take place according to your payout schedule, the cadence in which Stripe sends money to your bank account. You can change this setting in the Dashboard to any of the following payout schedules:

  • Daily automatic
  • Weekly automatic
  • Monthly automatic
  • Manual, which include Instant Payouts

Weekly and monthly automatic payout schedules allow you to choose on which days of the week or month you want the payouts to be initiated. You can initiate manual payouts at any time.

While most Stripe account holders are able to specify which payout schedule they prefer, certain countries have restrictions on payout schedules:

  • In Brazil and India, payouts are always automatic and daily
  • In Japan, daily automatic payouts are not available

How long do payouts take?

Your payout speed refers to how quickly payments processed on Stripe become available to be paid out. Payout timing depends on two factors: settlement speed and payout schedule:

  • Settlement speed: Refers to how quickly transaction funds become available in your Stripe balance. Settlement speed differs per region (a country list can be found here).

  • Payout schedule: Controls when Stripe transfers available funds to your bank account. Choosing a payout schedule alters payout cadence but not settlement speed.

Since settlement speed isn't the same for all businesses, it's typically expressed as a formula:

Payout speed = T + X working days

T is the capture time of a transaction and X is the additional time – usually in working days – it takes for those funds to be available for payout. For example, if you're located in a country where Stripe's payout speed is T+3 (our most common payout speed worldwide), then payments processed on a Monday would be available to be paid out on a Thursday. There is some variation here, since funds from some transactions take longer to capture after authorisation than others.

Stripe's settlement speed varies from country to country. You can find the settlement speed for your country here.

For Stripe users, the payout speed can vary depending on other factors such as your industry and the risk level of your business. High-risk businesses have a payout speed of 14 days, while some lower-risk businesses in the US and Australia have a payout speed of 2 days.

Payout schedule also affects payout timing. Stripe users can choose between daily, weekly, monthly, or manual payouts. For manual payouts, funds may take between 1 and 4 working days to arrive in your account. Additional considerations may impact your payout speed and cadence.

By leveraging next-day settlement with Stripe Treasury, you can instantly access payments earnings to send money, create spend cards, or convert currencies without having to wait for external bank transfers to settle.

How long does the first payout take?

In most cases, when you begin using Stripe to process live payments from your customers, you'll receive your first payout 7–14 days after accepting your first customer payment. This first payout usually takes longer than subsequent payouts, especially if you operate in certain countries or work in a high-risk industry.

Stripe next-day settlement

While standard settlement cycles typically operate on a T+2 or T+3 basis, next-day settlement allows your funds to become available in your bank account or Stripe balance within one working day of a transaction. This accelerated cycle is designed for businesses that require high liquidity to manage daily operations.

What are Stripe Instant Payouts?

As an alternative to Stripe's normal payout schedule, Stripe Instant Payouts allows users to receive payouts 24/7. This type of payout can be requested on any day or at any time, including weekends and holidays, and funds will appear in your bank account within 30 minutes. Using Instant Payouts allows you to send funds to a supported debit card (in the US, Canada, Australia, and Singapore), or a bank account (in the US, EU, and the UK).

Stripe provides Instant Payouts access to businesses that meet eligibility requirements and have been processing on Stripe for at least 60 days. Typically, Stripe offers Instant Payouts in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, European Union, and Singapore. To check your eligibility, visit your Dashboard.

Stripe Instant Payouts vs. next-day settlement

Stripe Instant Payouts and next-day settlements are methods for receiving your money more quickly, but they can serve different purposes for businesses. Here's how to choose the right option for you:

Feature
Stripe Instant Payout
Next-day settlement
Primary use case Urgent, on-demand access to earnings on an immediate basis Continuous, automatic liquidity management for daily operational cash flow
Speed and delivery Lands in external bank account or debit card within 30 minutes Available in balance / sent to bank on the next working day
Availability Working days 24/7/365
Eligible funds All pending earnings after card charge completion, up to a limit. Settled domestic card payments and non-debit methods.

Are there limits to Stripe payout amounts?

There are no limits on Stripe payout amounts, but there are required minimums before a payout can be initiated. Typically, the minimum payout amount is one base unit of the local currency. This means if you’re located in the US and you have less than US$1 in your Stripe account, you’ll need to wait until you accept more payments and increase your balance before you can receive a payout.

What fees apply to Stripe payouts?

While standard payouts on default settlement schedules are included in Stripe’s transactions fees, there are some additional costs for accelerated settlement speeds or multicurrency settlements.

  • Stripe Instant Payout: A small percentage of the payout amount.

  • Next-day settlements: Stripe calculates a monthly fee as a percentage of your prior month's accelerated volume. This fee is then automatically debited from your available balance at the start of the next month.

  • Multicurrency settlements: Stripe charges a small fee—generally around 1%—for some payouts in non-default currencies. (A full list of multicurrency settlement fees is available here.)

Currencies and bank accounts for Stripe payouts

Stripe accepts payments in over 135 currencies, and you can choose which currency you’d like to receive your payouts in. In most cases, your bank account needs to be located in a country where the desired settlement currency is the official currency. Or, you can use multicurrency settlement to settle in non-primary currencies, and Stripe Treasury to store multiple currencies.

In some countries, you can add extra bank accounts if you want to enable settlements and payouts in additional currencies. You cannot, however, receive settlements and payouts in multiple currencies to the same bank account. For example, if you're located in Sweden and you want to receive payouts in both EUR and SEK, you will need to open multiple bank accounts and designate one for each currency.

You can manage your bank accounts and settlement currency settings by going to the Bank accounts and scheduling page under Settings in your Stripe Dashboard.
