Behind the scenes: How Ramp built a global corporate card program with Stripe

Ramp is a finance automation platform that controls spending and streamlines operations to save time and money. In partnership with Stripe, Ramp developed, launched, and scaled its corporate card program that it has used to expand its reach across the US and more recently in Europe.

Ramp's mission is to help finance teams spend less time on manual work and more time running their businesses. Its platform combines corporate cards, expense management, bill pay, and accounting automation into a single system designed to reduce costs and increase control of spend.

At the centre of that platform is Ramp's corporate card program, which was designed to serve as a primary entry point to the Ramp experience. Shortly after the company's launch in early 2020, Ramp chose Stripe as its key strategic partner to help develop and launch its corporate card offering in the US.

Building a scalable issuing stack with Stripe

With Stripe Issuing, Ramp gained the complete issuing infrastructure it needed to embed card functionality into its platform. The company's developers worked with Stripe to build and incorporate custom authorisation and transaction-processing logic. They also used Stripe to collect and process the data Ramp needs to evaluate spending context, apply custom controls, and make real-time decisions. Issuing made it simple for Ramp to control the entire card experience – from authorisation and transaction processing to instant issuance of physical, virtual and one-time-use cards – through APIs.

Expanding Ramp's card program across the UK and EEA

With a scalable card foundation in place, Ramp collaborated with Stripe in 2023 to expand globally by launching localised card programs in the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA). The company's product and engineering teams worked closely with Stripe to support issuing in British pounds and euros, enable local settlement, and meet region-specific compliance requirements such as PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).

By building on the same issuing infrastructure it had used since launch, Ramp was able to quickly expand its card program across the continent so businesses could charge and settle in the local currency without foreign exchange (FX) fees. Ramp's card program is available globally, with Stripe powering card issuing across the US, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, France and Italy. Ramp and Stripe plan to continue partnering to support additional non-euro countries, including Sweden and Poland.

Today, the card program is the centrepiece of Ramp's integrated expense management, bill payment and accounting automation solution. The issuing infrastructure Ramp built with Stripe has been used to provide more than 2 million virtual and physical cards to more than 50,000 businesses around the world. With over $100 billion in annual purchase volume, these cards have helped customers save $10 billion in excess spending and 27.5 million hours in manual work.
