Millions of businesses and customers use bank payments to move money in the US. Most run on the ACH network, which processed $93 trillion in 2025, up 5% year over year.

Bank payments can be particularly cost-effective for businesses with high-value or recurring transactions, because processing fees are often capped rather than increasing based on each card transaction. Depending on the provider and transaction amount, businesses accepting ACH debits on Stripe can save up to 70% per transaction compared to cards.

However, those savings can come with additional complexity. You often need separate tools for account linking and verification, balance checks, fraud detection, payment processing, and facilitating payouts. The user experience can also create friction: customers might need to enter account and routing numbers, sign in to their banks, or wait for microdeposits in order to pay with ACH debits.

This guide explains how you can better manage and optimize bank payments in the US. We’ll cover how they work, how to choose a solution, and how Stripe can help you reduce processing costs, improve conversion, and grow revenue.

How bank payments work in the US

You can use bank payments to move money directly between bank accounts in four ways:

  • Debits pull funds from a customer’s account so you can collect one-time or recurring payments, such as insurance premiums or rent.
  • Transfers allow you to receive funds pushed from another party’s account, such as payment for an invoice.
  • Account funding lets customers move money into a financial account or digital wallet, such as a brokerage account, prepaid balance, or fintech app.
  • Payouts send funds to businesses or individuals, including marketplace sellers, insurance claimants, contractors, and customers receiving refunds.

ACH payments work differently from card transactions, which give you immediate confirmation of whether a payment can proceed. When you initiate an ACH debit or a customer funds an account, there is no instant confirmation that the funds will clear. ACH payments can take up to four business days to settle, and they might be returned because of insufficient funds, a closed account, or a dispute.

As a result, you might want to use an instant verification service to verify a customer’s bank account, ensure it has a sufficient balance to cover the amount of the transaction, and reduce the chance of an ACH return. During the checkout flow, a customer is prompted to select their banking institution and enter their account credentials to verify the account. The customer can complete this verification process entirely from within your checkout experience. This confirms that the customer can access the account, but does not guarantee that the account has sufficient funds.

If instant verification isn’t available, you can send microdeposits to your customer’s bank account. Once these small deposits are received, your customers are sent a link to verify the microdeposit amounts. This confirms that your customer does, in fact, have access to that bank account and the associated funds.

What to look for in a bank payments solution

Accepting bank payments requires you to manage payments and payouts, verify accounts and sufficient balances, obtain authorization, identify and prevent fraud, and create an effective checkout experience. The right solution can reduce that complexity while lowering payment costs. You should evaluate providers based on four capabilities.

1. Account verification, balance checks, and return prevention
You should be able to verify that an account is real, that the customer owns it, and that it has sufficient funds before the customer initiates a payment. The best solutions use historical failed payment data to flag transactions likely to fail due to insufficient funds, closed accounts, or unauthorized use.

2. An optimized bank payment experience
Look for instant bank account linking, so customers can connect and pay in seconds. The checkout experience should also let customers save their bank accounts and reuse them for faster checkout in future payments. Some providers extend this saved payment experience across businesses in their network, making bank payments more like paying with a saved card.

3. Fraud prevention designed for bank payments and other payment methods
A provider should offer fraud models trained on bank payment data, using signals such as institution-level return rates and behavior across businesses. If you accept multiple payment methods, providers should also use data from other payment types and a broad customer network to identify fraudulent patterns that bank payment data alone might miss. For example, fraudulent actors might shift from using stolen account details to taking over legitimate accounts. Look for a provider that can detect different types of fraud, adapt as tactics evolve, and let you set custom rules to automatically block, review, or allow transactions based on your preferred risk thresholds and business needs.

4. Support for every direction of money movement
You might start by accepting ACH debits and later need to receive transfers, fund customer accounts, or send payouts. You can streamline this work by choosing a provider that supports money movement in multiple directions, with verification, fraud prevention, reporting, and reconciliation built in. A provider that also supports bank payment methods outside the US can make it easier to expand into new markets without rebuilding payments infrastructure.
