Secured payments protect both buyers and sellers in France. They ensure that commercial transactions are worry-free and reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft.

Given the sophistication and rise in fraud patterns, it is important to use secure payment methods both online and in person. This article explains the safest payment services in France and how they safeguard transactions.

Key takeaways

  • Secure payments protect users from fraud, financial loss, and identity theft. They typically rely on encryption, tokenisation, and strong authentication.
  • Secure payments enhance customer trust and help minimise financial loss and litigation resulting from fraud attempts.
  • The most secure ways to pay in France include virtual payment cards, digital wallets, bank transfers, prepaid cards, and bank cards equipped with 3D Secure authentication or dynamic cryptograms.
  • Businesses add an additional layer of security to transactions by using payment platforms such as Stripe and encrypting their Checkout pages.

What are secured payments?

Secured payments are financial transactions protected against interception, theft, and fraudulent use of sensitive data. They help preserve the privacy of financial and personal data, authenticate payers, and prevent changes to amounts and recipients.

Secured payments typically rely on multiple complementary mechanisms, such as encryption, tokenisation, and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), to protect transaction details.

Protection mechanisms

Encryption prevents payment data from being read in transit. An encryption key modifies the underlying structure so that it cannot be read by unauthorised persons who intercept it.

Tokenisation replaces stored sensitive information with a temporary digital token of no real value. That way, if the token is stolen, it is useless.

The revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) introduced SCA for online payments in Europe. The customer’s identity must be verified via a personal code, biometrics, or other personal characteristic. There are exceptions for low-risk transactions or transactions under €30.

Secured payments also follow the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)—central to processing bank cards—and the data protection requirements of the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL).

Why are secured payments important?

Secured payments are important for gaining customer trust, especially online. Shoppers want to know that their purchases are safe from data leaks and identity theft.

For businesses, secured payments serve as both protection against fraud, litigation, and financial loss and a strategy for enhancing brand image, retaining customers, and complying with regulations.

What are the most secure payment methods in France?

In France, the safest payment methods are virtual payment cards (e-Carte Bleue being an example), digital wallets, bank transfers, prepaid cards, and bank cards equipped with 3D Secure authentication or dynamic cryptograms. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Virtual payment cards

Virtual payment cards are linked to a primary bank card. They let users make transactions online without disclosing their actual payment information. These cards generate temporary bank details to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Users can set maximum spending limits and expiry dates for these cards. Some financial institutions offer single-use versions or custom cards for recurring purchases.

Virtual payment cards are popular for one-time purchases or orders placed on unknown websites. Some traditional as well as online-only banks, such as BoursoBank, Fortuneo, N26, and Revolut offer the service for free.

Digital wallets

Digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal, are other secure payment services. They store payment data as a token in a digital environment, so businesses cannot see customers’ bank details. Customers simply enter their information once into a mobile device. Then, they can use the device to make payments online or in person without a physical card.

For greater security, digital wallets contain robust biometric authentication systems, such as facial recognition, fingerprint or voice ID, and encryption. Nearly 42% of French customers pay with digital wallets for everyday purchases.

Bank transfers

Bank transfers are made directly by a financial institution, with no intermediary. This results in an extremely low fraud rate in France, especially compared to bank cards, with €1 per €100,000 in payments, versus €53 out of every €100,000 for bank cards. Bank transfers are typically used for large transactions. They are protected through SCA, recipient verification (matching the name and IBAN), and encrypted networks in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) zone.

Pre-paid cards

Prepaid cards are not linked to a bank account. The card balance is determined in advance, so that if the card is stolen, the loss is limited to the funds on the card. Prepaid cards are ideal for small and medium-sized transactions.

Bank cards equipped with 3D Secure authentication

Visa and Mastercard invented the 3D Secure system to secure online bank card payments. The card user must verify their identity at the time of purchase, usually via a one-time code or biometrics through the banking app. With a 3D Secure bank card, scammers cannot make payments without the code or biometrics.

Dynamic cryptogram bank cards

Some bank cards contain a digital screen on the back that updates automatically every hour. The dynamic cryptogram strengthens the security of web purchases. Every time the code updates, the card data becomes unusable. It represents an added layer of defence against fraud and identity theft.

How can businesses ensure secure payments?

To secure online payments and build customer confidence, businesses need to ensure their checkout pages use “HTTPS.” A padlock icon might appear in the browser address bar. This tells users that the connection is encrypted.

Businesses can also work with payment platforms such as Stripe that secure transactions from end to end. Stripe offers robust security measures, including the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, and complies with the PCI DSS standard. The TLS protocol encrypts personal and bank data once entered. The information is never shared with businesses, so customers can have peace of mind when making purchases.

Stripe also has a tool called Radar that uses artificial intelligence (AI) models to detect and prevent fraud using data from Stripe’s worldwide network. Stripe Radar continually updates its models based on the latest fraud trends to protect businesses as fraud evolves.
