Frequently asked questions
Learn more about Stripe’s stablecoin cards.
What is a stablecoin card?
It’s a card that lets users spend stablecoin balances anywhere cards are accepted.
The cardholder pays like they would with a traditional debit card. Funds are drawn from a custodial wallet, noncustodial wallet, or Stripe financial account. Merchants receive payments as they would in a traditional card program.
Can users spend directly from a crypto wallet?
Yes. You can set up your program so cardholders draw funds from a supported noncustodial wallet or custodial wallet. Bridge smart contracts let cardholders spend directly from balances they control, without funding a separate card balance.
Stripe also supports custodial wallet models for teams that want a prebuilt solution to hold balances linked to a card program.
How can my card program generate revenue?
You can earn interchange revenue from eligible card purchases. Stripe passes up to 100% of that revenue to your program. Platforms can also charge a custom transaction fee that’s deducted from the cardholder’s wallet.
If your card program is tied to a custom stablecoin launched through Bridge Open Issuance, you can also earn revenue on reserves, depending on the stablecoin’s structure. With a custom stablecoin, users can onramp, hold, spend with a card, and offramp through one KYC flow, keeping these activities within your program.
Where can stablecoin cards be used?
Cardholders can use stablecoin cards at businesses in 150+ countries. Issuance is currently available in major markets across Africa, Latin America, and the US, with EU and APAC availability planned for 2026. A cardholder can avoid FX markups and cross-border fees when they spend in the country where they completed KYC.
Consumer and commercial cards offered through Stripe Issuing are issued by Stripe’s bank partners under licenses from Visa U.S.A. Inc. and Mastercard International Incorporated. Commercial Charge Cards are issued by Celtic Bank, Lead Bank, Fifth Third Bank, and Cross River Bank; Commercial Prepaid and Debit Cards by Sutton Bank, Lead Bank, and Cross River Bank; Consumer Credit Cards by Celtic Bank; and Consumer Prepaid and Debit Cards by Lead Bank and Cross River Bank. All issuing banks are Members FDIC. Certain card program features are subject to bank approval. In the US, Stripe Issuing balances are provided by Stripe Payments Company (NMLS #1280479), a licensed money transmitter, with funds held at Stripe’s bank partners, Members FDIC.
