Stripe Events: Privacy and Cookie Notice

Stripe (“Stripe”, “we”, “our” and “us”) organizes conferences and events, including Sessions and Stripe Tour, in various locations (each an “Event”). This privacy and cookie notice describes how we collect and use the personal data of individuals (also referred to in this notice as “you”) in relation to your interest in or attendance of an Event. It supplements the Global Privacy Policy on our website (“Stripe Privacy Policy”). Capitalized terms not defined in this notice have the same meaning as in the Stripe Privacy Policy.

1. Personal data we collect

We will collect data directly from you if you (a) register to attend an Event through an online form, email, Event website, Event mobile app, or any other registration method; (b) scan your badge at an Event; or (c) are already working with Stripe as an End User, End Customer, or Representative. Additionally, we may place cookies when you visit an Event website or use the mobile app associated with an Event. More information about our use of cookies can be found in our Cookies section below.

We may collect, store, and use the following categories of personal data about you:

  • Registration information such as your full name, phone number, postal code, job level, job function, organization, and email you provided when you signed up for the Event;
  • Profile data such as full name, phone number, and other information you provided when you signed up for an Event or set up your profile in an Event’s mobile app ;
  • Communication records between you and Stripe about an Event, which might include emails, surveys, feedback forms, and notes about verbal conversations;
  • Engagement data such as (a) your registration for and attendance of any Event, keynote, breakout talk, roundtable, ancillary events, and training sessions; (b) your interaction with sponsor booths, solutions hub activations, or Event experiences; (c),your participation in Event surveys; (d) your viewing of Event content via livestream, on-demand, or in the mobile app; (e) interactions with Stripe employees as part of an Event; and (f) the features you use in an Event mobile app;
  • Videos and photos may be taken during an Event for purposes of (a) being published and/or livestreamed via Stripe’s distribution channels for an Event; (b) weapons detection measures; and (c) any general business purpose, including marketing;
  • Social content such as posts, comments, photos, videos, or audio that you create and provide in an Event mobile app;
  • Marketing data such as your preferences in receiving marketing communications from us and your engagement with communications that we send or present to you; and
  • Device data such as your IP address, browser, screen resolution, operating system, and the date(s) and time(s) you accessed an Event’s website, mobile app, or on-demand content (please see Cookie section below for more).

2. How we use personal data

In relation to an Event, we may process your personal data to support our legitimate business interests in organizing and running Events; managing and improving our business operations; and managing and improving our products, services, marketing, customer relationships, and customer experiences, as long as the rights and interests of the data subjects do not override these legitimate business interests. Specific personal data processing activities we must carry out are:

  • registering interested individuals for an Event;
  • maintaining a list of registered individuals;
  • providing information about an Event;
  • sending invitations to sessions that may be of interest;
  • enabling interaction and communication between participants;
  • facilitating ancillary events;
  • providing interactive features in the Event mobile app;
  • giving notice of of available on-demand content from or related to the Event;
  • assessing the activity of attendees present at an Event, or via the website or mobile app;
  • documenting and recording an Event through photos, audio recording, and video recording;
  • enabling Event accessibility to remote viewers via livestream and on-demand video;
  • soliciting feedback about an Event to improve attendee experience;
  • providing Event support;
  • sharing post-Event materials; and
  • promoting future events and educational opportunities.

You have the right to object to us processing your personal data to support our legitimate business interests. If you object, we will stop processing your personal data unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing that override your interests, rights, and freedoms, or we need to process the personal data for the establishment, exercise, or defense of legal claims.

In addition to the above, and with your consent, we will:

  • send you marketing communications about Stripe products and services, invite you to participate in our events or surveys, and otherwise communicate with you for marketing purposes in accordance with your preferences,
  • make available the personal data you decide to upload to the Sessions mobile app; and
    • disclose your personal data to Event Sponsors and partners:
    • if you have consented during an Event registration phase to share your personal data with the third-party sponsors of an Event (“Event Sponsors”); or
  • if you have permitted an Event Sponsor to scan your badge at an Event.

You may withdraw your consent to these additional activities at any time.

Our Event websites and communications may contain links to websites, apps, and other online properties that are operated and maintained by third-parties, over which we have no control. The collection, use, and disclosure of your information will be subject to the privacy policy of those third-party websites or services and not this notice.

4. Marketing and advertising

We will send you marketing communications about Stripe products and services, invite you to participate in our events or surveys, or otherwise communicate with you for marketing purposes, provided that we do so in accordance with any applicable consent requirements and as allowed by applicable law. You can ask us to stop sending you marketing information by email at any time by visiting our Preference Center.

5. Sponsor Marketing and advertising

If you have consented to disclosing personal data to Event Sponsors, the Sponsor may send you marketing communications. You can review an Event Sponsor’s privacy policies and manage your preferences on their sites. We maintain a list of Event Sponsors and links to their policies here.

6. Cookies

The website and registration form for each Event uses cookies to enable website and form functionality, as well as for security and other essential purposes.

Essential cookies are necessary for each Event website to function properly, and they cannot be disabled.

We use Plausible Analytics to collect anonymized usage data on the Sessions website for analytical purposes. Cookies are not used and no personal data is collected. For more information, please see Plausible’s policy.

7. Weapon detection measures

To ensure your safety, we may use weapon detection devices at an Event. If an Event includes such measures, the device uses towers that emit extremely low frequency (ELF). Anytime the low frequency magnetic fields detect a shape or density of an object matching a weapon, a picture is taken with a highlighted box on the person or bag in question. The image is sent to a tablet that indicates to a security officer for additional scrutiny. Pictures are deleted on an ongoing basis and will always be deleted within 24 hours.

8. How we disclose personal data

We share Personal Data with other Stripe entities:

  • to facilitate the production of an Event;
  • to run an Event and ancillary events;
  • to market our products and services to you, based on your choices (see How We Use Personal Data); and
  • for internal administration purposes.

We will share your personal data with external third parties, including third-party service providers and processors acting on our behalf involved in organizing an Event. These include Enterprise Events Group, Inc. (‘EEG’)’ for event and session registration, Validar Inc for badge scanning, marketing and advertising platforms (such as Marketo), and providers of data and website hosting services.

Furthermore, with your consent we may share your personal data with Event Sponsors. These third parties will process your personal data in accordance with their own privacy policies.

9. Security and retention

We will retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, as required by law or regulatory guidance to which we are subject, and for the exercise or defense of legal claims that may be brought by or against us.

10. International data transfers

The information we collect in relation to your participation in an Event may be accessed, transferred to, and stored by external service providers and Stripe affiliates around the globe.
