Stripe’s infrastructure powers businesses all over the world. We process payments, run marketplaces, detect fraud, help entrepreneurs start an internet business from anywhere in the world, build world-class developer-friendly APIs, and more. Traffic engineers are responsible for the path a request takes from the client up until it first arrives at one of our api servers.
Stripe doesn’t process quite as many requests as Twitter or Facebook, but we do care a very great deal about reliability. Hundreds of thousands of businesses have staked their livelihood on Stripe; uptime and security are crucial to our continued success in the market.
We’re looking for people with a strong background or interest in infrastructure engineering, systems, networking, security. We’d love to hear from you whether you’re a seasoned infrastructure developer, or whether you’ve just learned you like working to enable other engineers build great software.
- Design, build, and maintain the core infrastructure used by all of Stripe’s engineering teams
- Debug production issues across services and levels of the stack
- Plan for the growth of Stripe’s infrastructure
- Build a great customer experience for people using your infrastructure

You may be a fit for this role if you:
- Think about systems — their edge cases, failure modes, and lifecycles
- Know your way around a Unix shell
- Can debug complex problems across the whole stack
- Focus on the needs of our users, both internal and external
- Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production
- Are able to write high quality code in a programming language (e.g. Ruby, Scala, Go).
It’s not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. For instance, we have wonderful team members who are really focused on their customers’ needs and building amazing user experiences, but didn’t come in with as much systems knowledge.
Projects you could work on:
Traffic is comprised of three teams – Edge, Apiori Infrastructure (our cardholder environment), and Load. We have a ton of important work to do, which is why we’re hiring! The teams work on items such as:
- Implementing, operating, and expanding geographically distributed points of presence to reduce the latency and improve the reliability of connectivity to the Stripe API.
- Ensuring the Stripe API is highly available and resilient to DDoS attempts.
- Building the infrastructure that powers our cardholder environment (where the credit cards are!). - Making it safer to work in, easier to ship new code, more reliable.
- Plan our next generation data storage for our card vault so that we can effortlessly scale horizontally. Find the most critical, performance sensitive Stripe endpoints… and break them (then help teams fix them).
