Staff Engineer, Bank Network Experiences

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Bank Network is a brand new team with global responsibilities. Its mission is to create the network that virtualizes the global banking system, providing the rails and banking capabilities to power and build innovative products and services.

We’re also building the next generation of payments and money movement products on top of the Bank Network. We recently launched a new state of the art Bank Transfers product, helping users to not only collect money from their customers via bank transfers, but also to help with the tricky problems that come with it around reconciliation. We build out a suite of functionality on top of the Bank Network including products to improve pay out speed and flexibility, products leveraging open banking technology across the world, and products to help our users manage their cross border and money movement complexities.

What you’ll do

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll be empowered to make decisions with a significant impact on Stripe and will need to set the technical direction across a variety of projects and initiatives while also mentoring and growing others on the team. Within the Bank Network team, you’ll be looking at how we can transform how Stripe abstracts and integrates with banks (a gnarly and complicated task) to ensure we have the right money in the right place at the right time, and reduce the cost of working with new banks or in new countries.

  • Scope and lead technical projects with large impact for our users in EMEA and across the world.
  • Scrutinise and reason clearly about the technology and architecture choices we make in building these products. In many cases, you will be the decider of these decisions.
  • Directly contribute to core interface design and write code. Serve as a role model for how well software should be written for Stripe as a whole.
  • Arbitrate critical decisions correctly that fully consider software best practices, Stripe system realities, and numerous stakeholders’ preferences and concerns.
  • Advise Stripe’s leadership team on key technical considerations related to the future of payments (e.g., on the utility of blockchain technologies).
  • Work effectively and cross functionally.
  • Align our technical decisions with Stripe’s broad strategic initiatives, while also advocating for needs specific to emerging new businesses
  • Work with engineers across the company to understand when existing infrastructure can be leveraged vs. when building a bespoke solution is prudent
  • Develop and execute against both short- and long-term roadmaps. Make effective tradeoffs that consider business priorities, user experience, and a sustainable technical foundation
  • Teach and mentor both individual contributors and managers to become the next generation of leaders at Stripe. As a senior member on a new team, you will be looked to for guidance

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • You have a strong technical background, including 8+ years of experience with designing and engineering large-scale systems.
  • You have served as the technical lead for a team of engineers for at least 3 years and can demonstrate broad technical leadership.
  • You have owned the technical roadmap for a business area.
  • You listen well and internalise the best ideas from all over the organisation while also setting a vision that others are excited to get behind.
  • You work well cross-functionally and your co-workers at all levels and across all teams trust you.
  • You are able to effectively adjudicate between many differing opinions and push the team and organization forward to deliver on complicated and multi faceted problems
  • You are an effective communicator, both in written and verbal communication. You are comfortable working with a broad, and very senior group of stakeholders. You can demonstrate when you have been able to influence and change direction for large parts of your organization.

Preferred qualifications

  • You are often cited as the inspiration for engineers that join your teams. Even senior engineers feel that they’re able to learn from you.
  • Financial systems experience is a plus but not at all a requirement.
