Backend / API Engineer, Advanced Attacks

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Advanced Attacks team aims to protect our users, financial partners and Stripe from transaction level fraud attacks such as card testing. To achieve this we develop fast and scalable infrastructure, and use ML models to detect and take action on fraud transactions while minimizing false positives to avoid user loss. Our team works cross-functionally with ML Engineers, Data Scientists, Strategists, Operations, product leaders and different payments teams to continuously prevent fraud attacks across different Stripe payment services.

What you’ll do

As a backend engineer, you will design and build platforms and services that are configurable and scalable to handle the most complex transaction fraud attacks across the world. You will partner with many functions at Stripe, including ML Engineers, Data Scientists, Strategists and product leaders. You will have an opportunity to work on infrastructure/platform systems, leverage ML to solve complex engineering problems on the chargepath and produce direct user-facing business impact.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable and performant services and systems
  • Work with a wide range of systems, processes and technologies to own and solve technical and product problems
  • Build and launch new capabilities and products that bring significant value to customers
  • Uphold our high engineering standards, and elevate quality and engineering efficiency within our many codebases and processes
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization including dependency engineering teams, product, design, infrastructure, and operations

Who you are

We’re looking for people with a strong background and passion in building successful backend systems, services and APIs that deliver impactful product values to our customers. You are comfortable in dealing with changes. You love to take initiatives, and bias towards action.

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • At least 2 years of professional software development experience
  • Experience in building distributed systems and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)
  • Write high quality code that is tested thoroughly, supported by clear documentation and has appropriate production observability
  • Empathy with users and a strong customer focus
  • Enjoyment in working with a diverse group of people with different expertise

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with or interest in ML, which powers many of the products we own
  • Proficient in Ruby, Java, and Scala; language can be learned and we care much more about your general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework
  • Strong data analysis skills using SQL.
  • Experience in payments and/or fraud

Hybrid work at Stripe

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

Pay and benefits

The annual salary range for this role in the primary location is C$134,400 - C$201,600. This range may change if you are hired in another location. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and specific location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the primary location may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
